It doesn't need to replace it totally. we need to use a variety of energy not just replace with another single easily controlled by speculators and giant corp etc.

It's a great idea and the gas is there but no vehicles or infrastructure. So it will be a good while in the future before we see any of this. And whether or not Joe Consumer will purchase such a vehicle all depends on what happens to the economy and the job situation.
