US Army Seeks $7 Billion Worth of Renewable Energy Projects

AOL -- Hear a bugle blowing? For the beleaguered renewables industry, the cavalry may be riding to the rescue

The US Army is inviting suppliers who can build, own and operate solar, wind, geothermal or biomass generation to qualify for a pool of contractors who will perform an anticipated $7 billion worth of work for military installations.

And the military work doesn't require a vote of Congress, extension of tax credits or appropriated funds.

The Army has also committed to developing at least a gigawatt of renewable energy by 2025, part of the Obama administration's goal to have the Department of Defense less dependent on imported oil.

With appropriated funds limited, the Army is using existing legal authority to entice qualified contractors to compete to build and run renewables on

If the army can build it... the taxpayers will come - with the moolah. Maybe not.

If the skinny punk's goal is to make the department of defense less dependent on imported oil as he claims, it would be cheaper and faster to just drill here.

>>This is a good strategic move by DoD - to build independence from grids and the oil barons in our defense. Way to go...and well worth my investment.<<

How much of the $7 billion being pissed out the DoD budget is YOUR investment, RBob? Or by your “investment” do you mean a contribution you may have made to Priorities USA?

By the way, the AOL.com article does not load in my browser, possibly because it relies on scripts from internet sites which are not aol.com and not any of the other sources which I have given permission to run scripts on my PC.

The Obama administration will stop at nothing to force Republicans to accept its version of tax justice for ”rich“ Americans.

"The Army wants to reduce its installations' vulnerability to the uncertainties of the civilian grid. Assistant Secretary of the Army Katherine Hammack says the military has seen electricity costs rising 4% to 17% per year, and experienced reliability issues because bases are often at the end of a grid."

The Military wants to control its long term costs, and reduce its vulnerability to power outages. I'm glad to hear that they are thinking in terms of renewable energy.

Until the economy recovers and unemployment is back to its normal levels, any spending and subsidies for renewable energy projects is a waste of taxpayers' money.

Time will tell whether the renewable energy sources actually work or if they're yet another money pit.
