Texas Regulators OK Wholesale Electricity Price Hike

The Texas Tribune -- The highest wholesale prices on the Texas electrical grid will be allowed to rise by 50 percent starting in August, following a vote by state regulators.

The Texas Public Utility Commission voted 2-0, with one abstention, to raise the "wholesale price cap," which electricity prices sometimes hit on hot summer afternoons. (The most recent such case was Tuesday.)

The idea is to allow power plant owners to make more money on electrical generation — which could give them an incentive to build more plants to supply the state's growing population. Right now they are not building new plants because of low power prices — linked to cheap natural gas — and the strain is evident on the grid when hot weather causes air-conditioning use to spike. But consumer and environmental advocates fear

@grandmamgt1 said, "But I thought all these windmills and solar panels were supposed to help.?

They would help a whole lot more if the fossil fuel industry would stop trying to block them and slow down their construction. The fact of the matter is that coal, oil, and natural gas-fired powerplants hate renewables because they're in direct competition with them.

Fossil fuel powerplants make the most money when they are running flat-out at 100% capacity. They don't want any other source of power that will force them to throttle back. Kilowatts that they don't generate is money that they don't earn.

How about you tell the coal lobby to get off the backs of the American people, @texasvet? They're the ones that are crying the loudest.

You think THEY want natural gas powerplants?

Where would you like to put the new plants, rjoeh? And once you cut all the regulations on pollution emissions, who'll want to live next to one?

Is there a guaranty that the increased revenues will lead to the building of new plants. They will just take the money and run.

More plants are the right answer... but cutting back on the regulations and improve permitting will go far further to getting the end product than raising local price caps.

There wouldn't be a shortage if the Obama Administration wasn't forcing the closure of coal fired plants and preventing the building of new ones. We'll eventually build enough natural gas fired plants to do the job, if the government gets out of the way. And it's none of the Sierra Club's business. They're just as obstructionist as the EPA.

Higher electricity prices will not be competitive with low oil prices => need to import more oil. We need to lower renewable energy prices via subsidies. Natural gas is really cheap right now in comparison to electricity and oil.
