New study links wind turbines to ill health

Toronto Sun -- They live in the shadow of wind farms, and their stories of turbine-induced illness have been brushed aside by the wind industry, Ontario regulators and the province's Liberal government.

But now, researchers have published the first ever peer-reviewed study linking wind turbines and ill health -- giving opponents of wind turbines their heaviest arsenal in a fight that could shape the landscape of rural Ontario and perhaps political fortunes in the next election.

"I view it as a huge step forward. It definitely gives credibility to our case," said Esther Wrightman, who's led a crusade against 70 wind turbines west of Strathroy.

The study, published in the periodical Noise and Health, found that a random sample of residents living within 1.4 km of wind turbines in two Maine communities

One wonders if there is any activity naturally occurring or man made that is not possibly harmful to the mammals including man that inhabit this world. The question that matters is scale. If a very high percentage of people within a given distance have had adverse reactions to the presence of wind farms, then we have a problem. If a very low percentage of people within a given distance have had adverse reactions to the presence of wind farms, then we do not have a problem but it would be very advisable for the wind farm companies and the local governmental entities to buy out those who are experiencing ill effects so that they can relocate.

I'm sorry but this study seems stupid... The turbines cause sleep depravation... Maybe the people are staying up late watching Leno or Letterman. I don't know how the turbines could cause sleep problems. High Voltage powerline EMF fields, maybe. But wind turbines... the humming sounds would relax people and make them sleep better. Like living near the ocean. Or maybe ocean waves cause sleep problems and we should outlaw ocean waves.

This is a single study. Not enough empirical information to shut down Wind Turbines in the US. This should be watched.

Just off the top of my head the questions I would ask are What brand of turbine, how tall, average wind speed, are there any other factors, such as have health records been kept before the Turbines were installed, and how large was the sampling of residents. You get the picture.

Clarification of my recent post of wire cages around windmills - the wire cages would need to be made of fine wire mesh screen in order to block the frequencies that interfere with radar.

Wind turbines generate a lot of low frequencies and other sub frequencies that are either close to a human heart rate and/or higher frequencies that can interfere with radar. A single windmill on a farm is pretty much harmless but the large wind farms can pose substantial issues.

Why not build wire cages around the windmills that could act as RF screens that would deaden the RF produced and would also protect birds from flying into the blades of the windmills?

There is no science in public policy. The mistake is to try to introduce it. Good politicians know how to lead with fear and consensus.

Hermleigh has a gas station under the brand name Alon (Fina formerly)directly on 84. I have been using it for the last 45 years. You are not always going to be able to see the turbines if the angle of the sun and wind are wrong. I was by last Sunday and filled up. As for the distances my family owns two sections there and I get mail box money if you know what that is from the Roscoe wind far. Maybe it helps that I was in the 108th FAG in Nam and a little deaf possibly.

If you want good data set up around the Roscoe wind farm there are 200 turbines to resonate in frequency if there is a problem.

NDSP--We took 70 south out of Sweetwater.

As best as I can tell from Google Earth, all the turbines are a couple
of miles from Roscoe and Sweetwater. There are about 4 turbines about 1/2 a mile away from Hermleigh. I20 probably makes a lot more noise than the turbines, but I would think that the frequency would play a role as well.
Is traffic noise more harmful than wind turbine noise? I can't say I know.

I don't think Hermleigh even has a gas station. The population is less than 400. But you have a point that one could study the residents and see what impact the turbines are having.

LMAO.///

The balance of scientific, medical and human experience to date clearly demonstrates that sound from wind turbines does not adversely impact human health," spokesperson Chris Forrest said.

"We've been waiting for this study for a long time -- it's just amazing," said Jane Wilson of Wind Concerns Ontario.

This needs many more years of study.

Look at how long climate change has been studied, and there are still doubters. Look at how long cigarettes had to be studied before anyone had a clue that smoking might possibly be harmful.

Yes, many more years of study are needed.

How is that noise any different than moving from the country to in town with extra noise. I live 20 miles from town and a while back spent a night in a town of only 200 and couldn't sleep from all the extra noise. So maybe towns should be outlawed too. Actually people will just get used to it like living by a highway or airport.

Ok.. I may not be reading that article right.. I am blonde..
But the article never says what kind of illness or sick is occuring..
I get 'sick' with colds.. or 'ill' with the flu... and I don't live near wind turbines.
This article was nothing but jibberish.

Burnt Orange if you went to Lubbock last week then you most probably went through Hermleigh which has a 230mw wind farm located in and within 1.4km of the town and schools. There are 3 2.3mw turbines actually on the high school grounds. If you drive south of Sweetwater you will find that Nolan is in the big middle of Horse Hollow Wind farm(735mw). The Roscoe Wind Farm (781mw) comes with in 1/2 mile of the City of Roscoe Texas. Funny what you miss if you stay on the interstate and US 84 bypass.

Sadly, the Liberals will get re-elected in Ontario because they pander to the largest portion of Ontario population - New Canadians.

These wind towers could have solar panels mounted on them or does the vibrations of the turning blade shake the tower too much?

You will not hear about this from the Obama Administration or main stream news as it is a negative on his green push. Only published in Toronto Sun, what about the NY Times. I have read about cows not giving milk under power lines and now its wind turbines, it has something to do with the frequency of the noise generated by electricity in power lines and the blades of wind turbines, it may affect humans in a simular way.

To understand this article, you need to understand the politics in Ontario, Canada ...

The Liberal (left-leaning, green-friendly) government has been in a scuffle with the Conservative (right-leaning) opposition party, and the rural homeowners who are being effected by the noise pollution are the pawns in the political battle.

I live in the middle of the battleground ... a city-dweller in a rural-surrounded community. The farmowners near the actual and proposed wind farms were not given much, if any, input into the set-backs for houses near the wind farms, and have been trying to get the ear of the Government to involve them in decisions about where to locate the turbines. They have tried the health problem angle for several years, and have now moved on to the property value argument to try to get the rules changed.

Until now, the Liberal Government has stated there are NO health risks associated with wind turbines, and cite numerous studies to support that view. The Federal Government, ruled by a Conservative majority waded in to announce a new Health Canada study to be commissioned to study the effect of sound produced by turbines on humans living nearby, but THAT report may take a few years.

In the last election, just last year, the encumbent Liberal majority Government was slapped hard by the rural vote and was reduced to a minority government, with the Opposition Conservatives trying to move in for the kill, so to speak. In the last couple of weeks, the Premier has resigned, and prorogued the Government until a new leader is elected by the Liberal Party.

And, of course the SUN newspaper chain, who is publishing this article is a right-leaning paper who have consistently written very negative articles about a wide variety of topics concerning the Liberal Provincial Government.

And all you folks from south of the border thought the only politics in the news these days involved Obama and Romney!! lol

I take this whole article with a grain of salt. Consider the source!
