Latest Inflation Data Show Little Sign That Gasoline Prices Are Derailing The Recovery

Seeking Alpha -- Recently many commentators have worried that rising gasoline prices will derail the fragile recovery of the U.S. economy. The latest inflation report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows little sign that any such thing is happening yet.

The headline all-items CPI for urban consumers rose at a 3.54 percent annual rate in March, down from 5.03 percent in February. (I base these rates on the unrounded CPI data supplied by the Cleveland Fed and state monthly data as annual rates.)

There are two parts to the concern that gasoline prices could harm the recovery. One is direct: Higher gasoline prices leave less money in consumer pockets for spending on other goods and services. That was a definite concern in February, when the monthly increase in gasoline prices was a full 6 percent. The m

Most of you confuse economic recovery and economic prosperity. The economic recovery is measured by the output of its businesses, not by the wealth increase of its citizens.

When the government purposely omits the price of fuel/gas from factoring into the inflation equation - it produces a false number. A purposeful practice that so many administrations have used to reflect positive light on themselves.

Gee, I didn't know we were in a recovery! With high unemployment, food costs and gas cost that keep going up. I must have missed it.

Recovery? What recovery?

As someone posted earlier on a different string,

"There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
-popularized by Mark Twain.

The author of this OpEd can use statistics all he wants, it won't change the real numbers. People are paying more and more for consumables--it's a fact, not a statistic!

------------

Oh, and damned straight, md11capt; Obama owns this now!

Recovery? B-b-but they told us the recession officially ended in the summer of 2009! What happened?

And the 'Fed tighten monetary policy'? ROFLOL! They've printed at least $17 trillion and now, there is no way back from the abyss.

"all-items CPI less food and energy" Did you catch LESS FOOD and ENERGY? So, if you don't eat, don't drive and don't heat your home, inflation is only 2.8 percent annual rate! Shazaam!

Sure gas prices show no sign of derailing the economic recovery. Such a recovery is as yet invisible to most of Americans.

Who the #$%* wrote this article, an oil company butt kisser? Some idiot really likes high gas prices for everybody.
Does this idiot think the millions who work the millions who work minimum wage jobs aren't concerned about these gas prices?? I am so tired of these big oil brainwashing these so called analysts and experts to write this type of article claiming the current gas and oil prices are in any way justifiable and easy for the drivers to swallow. Last year I had a 9$ / hour job and I spent a whopping 400$ in six weeks just commuting back and forth to work. I didn"t have much money left for my family's daily expenses and healthcare, had to drop my health insurance, too. Thanks Bush and Obama.

First, WHAT RECOVERY!

Second, Only a moron or Obama supporter would say that needlessly taking 14 Billion Dollars a week out of the economy could not be hurting things!

Third, I'm betting that the person writing the report doesn't buy gas or do the food shopping IE its the housekeeper and chauffeur doing it or they would have noticed that the Easter Ham cost 47% more then it did last year!

We got through this oil speculation bubble with only minor damage to the growing economy. A mild winter helped.

If you live in D.C. and have a cushie government job, where you never fear of losing your job, get raises, & get a lifetime pension and medical. Then, yes,gas prices have NO effect on your standard of living. But the rest of us it does.

I'm really not sure why people are so bent on using the word Recovery. They have been trying to tell us one in in effect for 4 years now. I just don't see it happening.

Interesting that the people who do this take a month and times it by 12 instead of adding up the last 12 months to get the number. We'll see if the optimism of cheap natural gas can overcome a full blown recession in Europe.
