Is This the Key to Vastly Better Batteries?

technology review -- Researchers are experimenting with a handful of ideas that could make batteries vastly better than they are today, which could lead to more affordable electric cars and cheaper ways to store solar power to use at night. But many of these approaches have one thing in common: they aren't practical because of the shortcomings of existing battery electrolytes.
Jerry Martin, CEO and cofounder of a small startup in Colorado, says his company—Boulder Ionics—is developing a type of electrolyte that would enable high-performance batteries. The electrolyte, made from ionic liquids—salts that are molten below 100 °C—can operate at high voltages and temperatures, isn't flammable, and doesn't evaporate. Ionic liquids are normally expensive to produce, but Boulder Ionics is developing a cheaper manufa

It is a shame that more do not read the whole article. The only way we all get better and more affordable products is through research. It is expecially crucial to meeting our future energy needs.

It is also amazing and incredible as to the disappearance of all comments on the well read news article after 8:30 pm! What happened PD?

It took one hundred years to get cars to were they are today. It will take decades to improve all the electric technology out there.

Will they be safe when they are carried onto airplanes or used in vehicles that go from sea level to mile-high cities like Denver and U.S. National Parks and U.S. National Monuments like Cedar Breaks (10,000 feet altitude)?

This is cool. Li-ion batteries were already way cool compared to regular Ni-Cad, and NiMH. This sounds like the next big step.

Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door... still hasn't happened. I'm afraid it's going to take someone to think way out of the box to produce a better battery. Hopefully I'll be able to see it in my lifetime.

Blah, blah, blah....yet another guy with an idea to revolutionize the battery. Hear it all before. He's looking for a grant to carry his company another 5 years, then he will go bankrupt and make out like a bandit.

The Libs will want to give this company 100s of millions of dollars. If they are successful the Libs will then decry the profits the company makes while trying to stop the technology for one reason or another (their plant in Boulder may, somehow, possibly affect a butterfly in South Africa).
