if the refinery would be well maintained after being built, that would make it worth it, but sadly, the motto "build it, use it, don't worry about anything else" seems to apply to most refineries.

Why are we attempting to refine Canadian Tar? Let the Canadians further spoil their own country.

If the Sierra Club as we know it today is opposing the construction of this new refinery, then it should obviously be built.

Okay, @wayoung56. No more Sierra Club but you have to outlaw the Tea Party, first.
Deal?

Okay, @SandeeC. You have a deal. The Sierra Club has to pay higher gas prices but only they get clean air and water.
The rest of you have to settle for whatever Big Oil deems "acceptable".

That's because Big Oil has a much harder time bribing judges than they do bankrolling legislators' election campaigns, @PizzaMon.

There should be some way to make people like Sierra Club members pay the highest prices in gas and the rest of the country pay much lower! Or find some way to kill THEIR economy.

Don't be so sure about the Midwest being huge farmland anymore, @jcurley. That drought hasn't gone away yet. Farmers are having a real bad time trying to bring what few crops they grew this season to market.
Expect the price of meat to go up. Feed prices have gone through the roof.

Sure, @30mpg80, the Sierra Club's the problem. Big Oil's hands are as clean as Ivory Snow, huh? The Sierra Club wouldn't be around if Big Oil hadn't screwed up the air, land, and water in the first place. Tell them to clean up their act and the Sierra Club won't have any members.

Of course, these are the same people who complain and blame others, particularly the oil industry for shortages of fuel when they go to the filling station.

Glad to hear you're offereing your backyard for a refinery, @bonzoonfmb.
Send Big Oil your address. They'll send a survey team in the morning.

Just understand that oil independence does not mean cheap gas, @zantor. Tar sands are expensive. Shale oil is expensive. Deepwater drilling is expensive. Those are the options in front of us.
We already sucked the cheap oil out of the ground 40 years ago.

Amazing. Record amounts of shale oil being produced in the Dakotas and they want to build a refinery that will process Canadian Tar Sand crude??? How does this make sense?
Build a refinery that can handle the shale oil, not that Canadian crap.
