HYBRID, ELECTRIC SURGE

Associated Press -- DETROIT — Americans are buying record numbers of hybrid and electric cars as gas prices climb and new models arrive in showrooms, giving the vehicles their greatest share yet of the U.S. auto market.

Consumers bought a record 52,000 gas-electric hybrids and all-electric cars in March, up from 34,000 during the same month last year.

The two categories combined made up 3.64 percent of total U.S. sales, their highest monthly market share ever, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. The previous high was 3.56 percent in July 2009, when the Cash for Clunkers program encouraged people to trade in old gas guzzlers for more fuel-efficient cars.

And while their share of the market remains small, it’s a big leap from the start of the year, when hybrids and electrics made up 2.38 percent of new car sal

Inbreds and EV's are too high priced for me. With the high price of purchasing a new EV or Inbred, I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept or anything else.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

If I had the money I would investigate one. Considering charge time, distance limits on electric, and no discussion of cost of electric or true cost per mile, I'm not sure they are any better

""GM sold just 7,671 Volts last year, below its goal of 10,000. But in March, it set a new monthly record of 2,289 for the Volt, an electric car with a small backup gas engine. Sales of the all-electric Leaf nearly doubled to 579.""

Looks like some fuzzy math, did they really sell 2289 volts in March???

As soon as the automakers engineers realize that 100 mpg car engines are the way to go and that they can easily do it, you will not see a hybrid or electric anywhere.

The cost of the vehicles and Batteries have a long way to go way way way down before they will get enough people to buy and get away from oil (if ever).

It is time to separate them into distinct categories for reporting. Since the Volt is technically a hybrid, true electrics are still a very small percentage of that small percentage (569 of 52,000). So the report should state that hybrids make up 3.6 percent of total U.S. sales, while electrics make up 0.04%.

Hybrids have been on the market long enough now to start to gain acceptance. And most don't really look at the payback time. They just like paying less for total gas consumption.

BS, this is just part of a campaign to make you think that if you don't have one then you are just totally out of touch with everything. GE purchased 12,000 of them to make their employees drive them or find another job. Guess who works for the obummer administration??? Jeffery Imelt or just the CEO of GE. Wake up people before they totally brainwash you with all this BS!

Not the smartest economic choice. Since most of my miles are highway miles a modern diesel powered vehicle is a much better choice.
