Growing Fraction of Shoppers Are Switching Auto Insurance Providers

J.D. Power & Associates -- The auto insurance shopping rate has reached the lowest point in the past five years, with only 25 percent of insurance customers indicating they shopped for a new insurer in the past 12 months, down eight percentage points from 2011, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2012 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study(SM) released today.

"The increase in the proportion of shoppers actually switching suggests that fewer price-checkers .... lower typical savings derived from switching suggests that fewer price-checkers are gathering quotes they are less likely to act upon, perhaps a direct result of the lower typical savings derived from switching, which has decreased from an average of $412 in 2010 to only $359 the past 12 months."

I would not touch Geico since Warren Buffet owns it and he doesn't pay his taxes. Even his secretary pays more than he does.

Geico has been the cheapest for me. Although I checked out Progressive, I decided to not go with them since the provided me the highest quotes of their competitors. I figured since they were not honest with me giving me quotes, I would not no with them.

Not only the name but the word Progressive is enough to keep me away from them. A Soros owned business is another reason to stay away from them.

If you have Progressive and find out George Soros own it, it would be time for a change.

I have let others quote but no one has even come close. Homeowners is even worse to get competitive quotes. Lots of calls after weeding out the outrageous ones.

I'm about to do it after having done it three years ago. I've been your customer for three years, no tickets, no accidents, no claims - and you don't lower the rate? Bye-bye.

Some folks who were with State Farm for a long time have discovered that a $200 discount on the auto insurance doe not make up for the extra $400 or more paid for the HOMEOWNERS insurance !!!!!

I think most people stay with an agent they know and don't switch. It pays to shop insurance.

Could be that the 'new' declining deductible trend keeps people from shopping.

I compare every two years, when I find a better apples to apples comparison I take it to my current carrier, they have matched every time I found a little lower quote.

The key is comparing the EXACT same coverage.

...several of my friends have switched around lately after feeling like captives in their ins. plans & found incedible new deals...I've been with American Family and treated fairly...

I'm having a tough time making sense of this. More people are switching but fewer people are shopping? Are people just going berserk then and switching just for the hell of it?

I think I'll ignore this.

It's not only a matter of lower prices, but also excellent service. Also, whether you have home and auto insurance together. I've been with Farmer's, AAA, Mercury, Progressive, and Liberty Mutual over the years. I've stayed with Liberty for the past four years. I continue to receive excellent customer service.

I recently received a quote from another carrier. While the auto insurance was slightly less, the homeowner policy was over $1000 more a year. My friend had Allstate and she recently switched to Liberty also.

I still shop every year. My current carrier continues to be among the lowest that I have gotten quotes from. 6 years ago that carrier bumped my rates on renewal. That didn't fly with me so I changed. 4 years ago the "new" carrier bumped my rates. I shopped again. Ended up going back to the one I left - and they haven't bumped my rates in the last 3 years. Coming up again in September - we shall see if I stay with them or goooooo>>> bye bye.
