Exploring the Witch Hunt Against Hydraulic Fracturing

OilPrice.com -- Natural gas production, from hydrocarbon rich shale formations, known as “shale gas,” is one of the most rapidly expanding trends in onshore oil and gas exploration and production today. A key element in the emergence of shale gas exploration has been the refinement of cost?effective horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies.

No question, regulations must be imposed to ensure adequate oversight and selection of qualified and trained operators that employ best management practices when handling, injecting and disposing fracturing fluid. Nevertheless, the industry is not standing still. To the rescue are new “green” fracturing additives, better ways to treat and recycle the waste water, and new technologies that reduce water consumption in half.

In the media reports, less than half of all media referenced scientific studies, with only 25 percent of broadcast news mentioning them. The emotional play of blogs, images and, most importantly to fracking, fakeumentaries with staged scenes of tap water on fire are the epitemy of a witch hunt. UT STUDY

More than anything, I question the author's credentials. Who is he and what is he a "Dr." of? Stevens couldn't even spell "hypocrisy" correctly. Anybody can post their opinion on the 'net. But, I don't buy into the notion this article is peer-reviewed or a serious study on the subject. Some of the posters in the forum have tried to berate environment conservation, alternative energy and PBS into this discussion. Pardon the pun, but, why are you trying to muddy the water on the topic? They have nothing to do with whether there is or isn't a bias on the hydraulic fracturing process. I don't claim to be a geologist or chemist. But, when I see earthquakes happening in places that don't normally have seismic activity, and well water that is polluted with chemicals that aren't normally present, it makes me want to know why. Shouldn't you wonder, too?

In Ohio there have been minor earthquakes. In Pennsylvania there has been water contamination. In Colorado water is bid on and fracking won over ranchers/ farmers. In Texas there hasn't been a problem. The industry isn't completely guilt free.
