EPA Pressured to Drop Ethanol in Gas Requirement

Fox News -- Corn prices are up 60 percent this summer, Christopher Hurt, a Purdue University economic professor, estimates. And now Democratic governors from Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina and Arkansas have joined ranchers, poultry farmers and the United Nations director-general for food and agriculture in asking the Environmental Protection Agency to waive the federal requirement that gasoline contain 10 percent ethanol.
"It's universally acknowledged that ethanol is raising the price of food," Kenneth Green of the American Enterprise Institute said. "It's not lowering the price of gas. It isn't. Ethanol is simply a bad idea on all counts as to being fuel. For now. Gas prices would not drop with the elimination of ethanol. Too many other factors influence the price of gas at the pump. I agree with the sentiment though. I hate to see all that ethanol not going into making great Bourbon really cheap! (grin)

I could be wrong about that, but without a funded federal mandate, the costs would come directly from state coffers. Not arguing the point you made, just pointing out that someone has to pay for the bureaucratic red tape and AFAIK, it isn't the federal government at the pumps.

Ethanol in gasoline was a bad idea from the get-go. Diverting corn to fuel raises food prices, lowers fuel mileage and ultimately increases the consumption of petroleum. Don’t just waive the mandate; repeal it.

If your milk was 10% arsenic that would have to be labelled wouldn't it? Personally I don't mind 5 or 10% ethanol but would like to know exactly what the content is. State to state the difference can be huge.

Their agenda would price all energy out of reach. Their Luddite antipathy for America and its prosperity are the root of their rancor. No pressure will influence the EPA. That aside, the EPA is not the one mandating ethanol. Congress has. They will not stop the ethanol madness anytime soon. I hope it goes away. Feed zee korn to zee aneemalz not zee karz!

The Obama administration appointed the EPA chief, so they are not about to do something about reining them in. We need to stop using ethanol in gasoline now!
