of course, with sweet light crude (the basis for ULSD) no longer being as readily available, the US should do what Europe has done for a long time: add cheap plant-derived oils into the mix (Brassica rapa is the main source for European B-20 and other Biodiesel mixes).

Tiger: although diesel costs more (currently about 45 cents difference at many stations here), it has a higher energy content, which is why you can get a Jetta TDI that gets 58 mpg w/out problems and w/out much of any fancy technology. When you think that you get about 35 - 38 mpg w/ the same car using a gasoline engine, that's a pretty big difference that still adds up fast.

wild3: you're right. Isn't it funny how even supposedly well researched articles are still not showing up the facts?

They didn't come back because they were never gone. I started with cars that got 40 to 50 MPG: 1979 I bought a brand new VW Rabbit D in 1978, I bought a second ne used. 1981 Rabbit D pick from E-bay 1985 Golf for $800, used 1986 Suburban 6.2 Diesel 4X4 I bought two of these in the 1990's.These got 18 to 20 MPG, cost around $2000 each used I replaced them with a 1997 6.5 turbo K2500 pickup 15 MPG I replaced the Golf with a 2003 Golf TDi I picked up a 2011 BMW 335d which came with a $900 tax credit and 4 year 50,000 miles of service included! They were there all the time if you wanted one and looked for them!

Good. The new diesel cars are great at squeezing more mile out of a gallon. Its like buying concentrated fuel. Pay a little more for it, but you get alot more miles out of it. Figure out the cost per mile. Maintenance cost is comparable to gas from my experience. I see it as a win-win.

But diesel is more expensive than Reg. gas. Only way to bring that price down is to restrict exporting the US Diesel.

The more diesels maybe less ethanol will be used. More ethanol for export!

Around here (North Caroliana) diesel seem to be about thirty cents higher than regular.

Diesel fuel prices outweigh much of the efficiency gains at current rates.

disel might run cleaner because they are not forced to add ethanol. this reduces fuel efficency and fouls engines

I have 2 gas 0 diesel. Ford makes a diesel Fiesta, but refuse to bring it to the USA, I'd buy that one.

Convert the trucking industry to NG to lower pressure on diesel fuel and speed up introduction of diesel vehicles. The engines are far more durable and more fuel efficient.
