Costco: Gas dealers don't want competition

Burlington Free Press -- Local gas dealers have used the state’s environmental laws to prevent Costco Wholesale from opening a filling station at its Colchester site in the past, but the members-only retail giant expects its new permit application will ultimately be approved.

“We intend to vigorously pursue our rights in court, and we are confident that we eventually will prevail,” Joe Portera, a Costco executive vice president, wrote in a July 16 letter to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., that the senator made public Tuesday.

Portera did not respond to a Free Press request for comment Tuesday.

Sanders, who has called for a federal investigation into the high price of gas in the Burlington area, said Tuesday he plans to stage a “field hearing” of the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee in Burlington sometime

Competition keeps prices low. Competitors have the advantage as they do not charge membership fees each time to fill up like Costco, Sam's Club or B.J.'s do.

How much does Costco members really save when the they have to pay every year: $30.00 or more for membership.
If that is factor-in if the average member does not get much of a deal....So let Costco have their way.

Figure in the fee Costco charges "members" and there's no way you're going to save anything because of their gas. It's a legal, "sounds good" scam. The best deal at Costco is their pharmacy, and ANYbody can go in there.

It isn't all that bad.

I frequently find the Tesoro in my area is priced the same as Costco. I rather fill up at the Tesoro because their premium hose is separate vs the shared hose (for regular and premium) at Costco.

This is not a secret, that is why the prices go up and down together. One or two cents a gallon is not competition.

I like Costco & Sams Clubs being in the area myself because it helps keep the price of the other stations around them down.

screw the other dealers, bring in the competition. have a shell station on the way to work that used to be one of the highest in town until another station opened a block away. they aren't the highest anymore.
