Conoco Fattest U.S. Dividend Offers 4% Income Not Growth: Energy

San Francisco Chronicle / Bloomberg -- ConocoPhillips will court income- focused investors with a dividend yield quadruple that of its peers after spinning off its refining business this month to become more of a pure oil and natural-gas producer.

The plan to pay at least 4% will help compensate shareholders for production and earnings growth that trails rivals..

Paying the highest dividend of a major U.S. oil producer without cutting capital spending will challenge ConocoPhillips compared with its new competitors that have lower dividend burdens. Chief Executive Officer designate Ryan Lance gave an update to investors in a webcast today on the company's outlook.

ConocoPhillips's annual dividend of $2.64 a share divided by its closing April 13 stock price of $73.63 produced a yield of 3.6%.

Such a high dividend comes with

The fat dividends probably won't be much of a problem. ConocoPhillips will be getting $5.8 billion in cash in conjunction with the spinoff of Phillips 66.

He's doing his talking through the SEC 10-12B forms Phillips 66 has been filing.

Web site will likely come on line April 30th.

Phillips 66 has been issued the ticker symbol PSX which is now trading on the "when issued" market at $36 a share.

They are sell at a rate of 4%. One might consider them worth a look.

As to the maximum you can get as a bank CD, you can get 2.85% monthly coupon (interest paid out and not compounded) for a twenty year callable CD.

There's a lot of companies out there that pay a dividend yield of 2.85% or greater. And most dividends are taxed at a 15% or lower rate so that's worth something.

Or the phone company. AT&T and Verizon both have dividend yields exceeding 5%.

Ryan Lance is most definitely looking for additional stockholders.

Greg Garland (CEO of Phillips 66, the refining business that will be spun off the end of the month) is also looking for additional stockholders, but he isn't talking. They don't even have a Web site yet (you try to go to phillips66.com, you get forwarded to phillips66gas.com).

Mom & Pope station? I've never heard of a church that considered pumping fuel to be one of their ministries.

Well, can you find a bank CD that pays 4% interest on your savings?

Instead of complaining about "Big Oil" taking all your money, people might try investing with them.

This is not an advertisement, it's a wake-up call.

Sounds like a win only for the speculators + then can whine that refining bus. isn't profitable & close more down, as it has separate books.

Perhaps they should consider cutting their pump price a bit to attract consumers
