Chattanooga-made VW Passat sets mileage record

Chattanooga Times Free Press -- A Chattanooga-made, diesel-powered Passat has set a new mileage record on a single tank of diesel fuel as it traveled 1,626 miles, according to Volkswagen.

The trip in the standard, six-speed manual Passat from Houston, Texas, to Sterling, Va., averaged 84.1 MPG, or 4.65 cents per mile, the automaker said. The Australian couple are so-called mileage experts who work with car and tire companies and hold other records.

They said they carefully planned the route, traveling from Houston to Jacksonville, Fla., and then to Virginia using interstate highways over three days. They tried to keep the car in sixth gear when possible.

Also, they said they drove about 5 miles per hour below the speed limit in the Passat TDI featuring a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine running on ultra-low sulfur die

syd: not quite, but there isn't that much of a difference. Usually about 2 mpg or so. And some manual transmission drivers can rev up the engine pretty high, leaving good fuel efficiency in the dirt.

This efficiency could not be achieved with an automatic transmission!

Absolutely phenomenal! Although this is an extreme case, it does go to show you what is possible, particularly with Diesel.

VW Passat, 2 liter - 4 cylinder engine, one tank of diesel fuel, 1,626 miles, 84.1 MPG, selected tires, transmission in sixth gear when possible, Houston, Texas to Jacksonville, Florida to Sterling, Virginia - using carefully planned route on interstate highways, 5 miles below speed limit. *Do Not expect to get the same MPG in everyday driving!
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Spoken by a true, lazy driver. Cup holders, cell phone, satellite radio, and a few other things keep you busy while driving. Others enjoy the art of driving and have time to shift a standard transmission.

With mileage like that it makes the extra vehicle cost and higher fuel cost quite bearable. I do wonder how many people would or could deal with a six-speed manual, however.

Not really. Audi and BMW do, Mercedes has a couple of them approved for all 50 states. So there are a few but most of them (VW excluded) are pricey.

This shows what can be done with a diesel engine. A 2013 Ford Fiesta diesel, which Ford does not intend to import for some reason, could plow this record away. In the European cycle, it averages around 86 mpg, much better than even the Prius. It is in full production now.

It would be nice to get this mpg factor. But it's not realistic in traffic or for long periods of time. And diesel is no longer the bargain fuel of years past.

I have a tractor with a modern diesel engine. It is easy to start, runs well and has had no problems of any kind. These are not your grandfather’s diesels. I would not hesitate to buy a diesel car or pickup. Fuel is a bit more expensive but MPG is a good deal better than gasoline.

The modern diesel powered cars make much more sense than the hybrids do economically.

lot's more new diesel model's coming kinda soon, not soon enough though.
burn's clean now, big mileage, diesel nozzles @ about every station & growing. This should make a dent in barrels needed fairly soon.
Now just get lot's of bigger municipalities to start on CNG, get some bigger truckin' company's to try it on some big run interstates routes.
I believe that a quick solution to a growing problem, see what works best & grow from there. just my view, oh, motorcycles, light scooters runnin' around the citys = instant reduction.
