Bright Automotive Shuts Down, Slams DoE Loan Process

Green Car Reports -- Startup plug-in vehicle maker Bright Automotive announced today that it is closing down.

While General Motors had invested $5 million in the company, Bright had relied on the hope that the U.S. Department of Energy would grant it low-interest loans under the advanced-technology vehicle manufacturing program.

Sounds like the government put an end to something that might have worked.

A shame the firm could not get it into production, but good that DOE has more stringent financing terms now. Hopefully these tougher terms for loans will continue. If Bright has truly been at this design for years, they should have some patents that will still be marketable.

"Plug-in delivery van

Bright was founded in January 2008 to develop and build a plug-in hybrid light commercial delivery van, a vehicle type that covers more miles than passenger cars and whose owners are willing to spend more up front for the promise of savings over the lifetime of the vehicle.

Its design, the Bright Idea van, offered a payload of up to 2,000 pounds and gas mileage in mixed use of up to 100 miles per gallon.

It was to run up to 40 miles on electricity from its 13 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that powered by a rear-wheel drive electric motor.

Then, its four-cylinder GM engine and transmission would take over, assisted by a smaller electric motor, to power the front wheels.

In essence, the Bright Idea was to be the world’s first plug-in through-the-road hybrid delivery truck.

We drove the Idea prototype back in October 2009, when its extended-range engine was a 2.0-liter gasoline engine from a Dodge Caliber.

We found it performed -- and behaved -- much like a conventional hybrid, with the same lag on acceleration and disconnect between engine speed and road speed you’d find on any conventional hybrid car.

The collective employment history of Bright’s founding engineering team included engineers from teams working on the GM EV1, Ford Fusion, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and even Segway."

Thanks for a very good actual news article Lord Stanley! Something that has been lacking here due to censorship and the "Nuke" machine.

I bet that 90% of the posters here had no idea what this company was about or what their vehicles were.

I'm surprised that Chu did not send them a taxpayer check to fund their management "bonuses". Did they have Obama cronies on the boar of directors? Did they not fund the super Chicago PACS?

Another wishy-washy government non-decision. We'll never know if it saved tax payers millions.

This probably shows how much their car was worth. They could not get public financing and wanted the American public to bite the bullet. Due to the fact that the dept of energy would not give them the loans it probably means their cars might have worked due to the fact that the dept of energy does not know how to pick a winner or loser. The odds seem to be against the energy dept on making the right choice.

Another feather in the cap of the O'Bama administration! It is no wonder the number of Federal Government employees increases from year to year! And yet these bozos at the DOE can't even get their act together to help a legitimate green start up? But they still have their jobs at the DOE? At least this didn't cost the taxpayers millions of dollars like O'Bama's blunder at Solindra! Whats worse is that half of you reading this want to re-elect him! The U.S. - Euro/Socialism next big conquest!

Here we go again with the poor judgement of the DoE and its loan to another auto company which has bit the dust. Do we hear anything from Obama about ALL the loans given out to companies which have bit the dust. We can not afford Obama for another 4 years.
