Auto theft: How not to get your car stolen

The Express Tribune -- If someone is following you, drive in the centre lane and drive to a crowded place. Always check your back seat when you get into your car and never ever leave anything of value inside it. This advise was given by Farida Essa, the general secretary of Consumer Association of Pakistan (CAP), during her presentation on how the consumers viewed car theft.

In her presentation Essa discussed how cars were stolen, why they were stolen and what tools were used in them.

She was talking at a seminar titled “Tracking of Stolen Vehicles on Highways and Motorways”, organised by National Highways and Motorways Police (NH&MP).

SP Usman Ghani Siddiqui of Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) criticised the weak prosecution loopholes in the system which allowed seasoned car thieves to get out on bail

there is nothing you can REALLY do to stop car theif if he really wants your car for 5 reasons:
1) yours is a car they want to steal for their car theft ring;
2) you stupidly, left the keys in your ignition or left it running while you stopped at the local quik-mart;
3) you got drunk or lost or worse, parked it in the wrong side of town;
4) you were too cheap to buy anti-theft devices and
5) you lent your car to a roommate who has a drug habit and got car-jacked on the wrong-side of the tracks!!
all of that is BULLSH++, nothing is perfect and no amount of money will guarantee that your car won't be stolen and it doesn't matter what part of town you live in or come from, 'cause if crooks want your car - THEY WILL GET IT!!

Also, don't let anyone who is carrying an AK-47, or who has sticks of dynamite strapped to their body, get too close.

Unfortunately that was pretty much a waste. The only thing fairly recent in it was the Anti-tracking devices some thieves are deploying.

I'll keep that in mind...the next time I'm driving from home or work... to Pakistan. I suspect that I would have more there to worry about than just having my car stolen.

"NH&MP." Hmmm, doesn't quite have the same ring as "CHiPs" has.

Instead of Ponch and John on motorcycles in L.A., maybe Omar and Charvak driving Tata Nanos in Lahore. Who knows? It might be a hit!
