Auto Black Boxes: Will They Invade Your Privacy?

The Wall Street Journal -- If you thought having EZ Pass in your car would make it too easy for the government to track you, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

The Senate passed a bill in March that calls for “mandatory event data recorders” (or black boxes) to be installed in all new passenger motor vehicles, starting with the 2015 models, and which would record data before, during or after a crash, according to KurzweilAI.net.

The bill, which can be seen here, has a privacy provision but gives the government the authority to access the black box in a number of circumstances, including court order, consent of the owner, an investigation or inspection, or to determine the need for emergency responses.

I'm afraid none of that will happen once this has been in use for a while. Let's just hope the House has enough sense not to approve it. But it is in the Highway Bill so I doubt it will be taken out.

Not much sense sweating the small stuff; it's only the beginning of the 21st century, we have GPS navigation and Cell Phones w/gps, Google earth, surveillance cams; the list is only going to grow; only a matter of time! Time, that seems to grow quicker, with each passing second.
Animals have chips under their skin; how much longer before we have identifying chips that know where we are 24 hrs a day w/satellite tracking.

Orwellian time is now; excuse me, while i ck my battery in my forearm chip! {;-|

I really waiting for the "beam me up scotty device"; the H#$* w/cell phones, that's the gear I really want!!
{:-O

It's just that it was a pretty big step the day the Patriot Act was signed in to law. But that was Comrade Bush, so it probably doesn't count.

You think the courts are backed up already, just wait till they start "analyzing the data" like an airplane black box, it will take forever to sue the pants off an DUI idiot.

It would be useful if a serious accident winds up in court but for routine stuff, no way. It should probably be inadmissible in court unless both vehicles in a crash have the device in order to fairly assess responsibility.
