2030 or sooner. It will take a bit to re-tool our infrastructure to use alternate energy sources. Hopefully we will be smart enough to convert to renewable, carbon-free sources.

A car has already been made to not run on gas. It runs on Hydrogen, the problem now is it will take 10-15 years to have enough Hydrogen Cell Stations throughout the country. The story was on MSNBC News a couple of days ago.

It will take 10 - 15 years just to get the gas hog SUV's and F150's off the road.

ellissandiego hit the nail on the head. Gas prices are definitely driving changes in behavior. I myself have been car pooling to work with a co-worker for the past couple of months. My most recent tank up cost $146! Prices like that have me thinking very carefully about how my money gets spent - I walk the mile to the local video store and supermarket rather than drive.
Having said that - I am in favor of gas prices rocketing upward. It's the only thing that will drive serious change in our society. The oil companies will run themselves out of business if prices keep climbing. Why do you think OPEC has stepped up to say that they will do everything they can to ensure no further "artificial" raise in price occurs? If prices continue to climb the innovative garage minds of our society will find a way to get around the oil problem. Solar power? Wind? soybeans? Whatever it may be, higher gas prices will fuel (excuse the pun) progressive change. BRING IT ON!

Sadly, I think the era of "car culture" will come to screeching halt for those of us with moderate income. In the meantime some of us are going to have to rethink our lifestyles. Walk more and drive less...until a feasible alternative is available to the masses...move closer to where we work...use public transportation...budget our time differently. Change is going to be painful on so many levels...

Oil has many more uses than just fuel. Oil is actually the most cost effective raw ingredient for making synthetic plastic compounds. All those plastic bottles, plastic packaging, hard plastic bowls, cups, etc., are derived from oil as other natural resources are not as easily converted and, hence, more costly to use to make plastics. The plastic casing for the laptop I'm typing this message on is made from plastic!
The oil that is available on our planet will be very useful even if we don't burn it up to get from point A to point B.

What good is the oil if we don't use it for fuel? A waste of natural resources. You can't eat it, you can't drink it, you can't breath it. Drive it!

I'd like to believe it could be done within 20 to 25 years, but without a determined and consistent commitment by government, industry and the public, it could take half a century or more.

Long after I'm gone... what a cope out. the next question should be do you care.
You gotta love the answers here. Maybe we haven't used 1/4 of it yet. As if only using 1/4 of it is a good thing. If it takes a 1000 years to make a product and we use 1/4 of it in 5 years, is that a good thing. Please!
And what about there are no incentives. How about avoiding $4 or $5 or $6 gas? What about the pollution? The dependence on other countries for oil. No incentives! You are so short-sighted.
I can't read any more of the comments or I would never stop writing.

The year we will no longer be dependent on fossil fuel is a tough one to call. I hate to sound like a hippie but we could change to other sources of fuel in less than a year. The real question is what will we be willing to do to make the change. Change hurts, and I don't think the U.S. is ready for that dramatic a change.
If we keep going the way we are now I believe we won't be around to see 2050.
But to answer the post ... 2075

It will be a very slow process. There's too much tied to fossil fuels, our way of life and standard of living. We have our own reserves we haven't even tapped into.

there may be a lot of fossil fuels left, but can we economically get them? We haven't built a new refinery in this country for quite a few years - too many regulations, environmental esp. There just doesn't seem to be any incentive for people to cut back on driving, no talk or action on improving mass transit (and we keep on with the suburban sprawl), we are taking out railroad tracks and putting in bike/hiking paths which go nowhere. We have a rapid transit system in Buffalo which goes north/south and nowhere else, and is useless unless you drive to a parking lot to get on it.
hybrids/electric/natural gas cars? no incentives there - and anyway - you still need some form of fuel to produce the electricity, etc.
me - I am thinking of putting a sail on my car.

Gas/Oil prices will never decrease and we will never see any other form of an economical vehicle as long as the oil companies keep padding the pockets of politians who only care about their own welfare and making their own bank accounts bigger. Same as social security issues, if the politicians actually had to live by their own rules, you can bet $$$ things would turn around in a heart beat. It is sad to say, but our Gov't isnt "about" or "for the people" any more, its about looking out for them, not us. We need to change things up in the congress and the senate. I agree with MarinaNet.

The real question is will we over consume and eventually run out or will we shift to more renewable energy before we run out. I hope that before China and India adopt our car frenzy and oil guzzling ways, that we can switch to renewable energy.........

That's like asking when we will be free from a congress that won't let us drill and has too much red tape for a new refinery to cut through to build a new one; my answer is close to never or long after I'm gone..........

I believe that we will forever be dependent on fossil fuels. There is simply no way around it and biodiesel isn't a realistic solution it doesn't contribute to even 1% of what the U.S. oil demands are. And to thug life there is a lot of fossil fuel left, but it won't be around forever. The world's largest oil field located in Saudi Arabia is seeing a drop in production.

You have to remember that during the gas crunch of the 70's they told us we would run out of oil by now and that never materialized. As long as multimillionaire profitteers are in control of the oil fields, refineries and pumps, we will never run out of useful energy.

Lana0301 hit it right on the nail. One last good gouge before the Bush family is removed from office. And musical fruit, remember the line from National Lampoon's Vacation, "I don't know why they call it hamburger helper when it tastes just fine by itself," as Randy Quaid was flippin it on the grill.

I figure that it will take about the same amount of time as our switch to the metric system. Oh, wait. Wasn't the US supposed to make that switch back in the 70's? AND it still hasn't happened!
