turnpike/freeway
25 miles + $1.50 tolls
25 miles back home +$1.50 tolls.
so 50 a day+$3 a day tolls
get 270 miles/tank
work 7 days a week now
so about $75-90 a week spent just to work
I said it before and now everyone see's, when the republicans lost congress gas was going to GO UP and see, it is. Does anyone think that the ceo's of Mobil or BP or Shell are 1:democrats and 2: think of the working guy? Hell no.......

Since I've retired, it's about half and half, but the good news is that I only put just under 3,000 miles on the car last year.

Tang, hard to imagine someone offering to give you a ticket for keeping him from freezing his butt off in a ditch. Cold must have affected his judgment.

Panama19 , then you know how Rt. 2 gets in the winter. A couple of years ago I stopped to pull a highway patrolman's car out of the snow. He was stupid enough to say he was going to give me a ticket for being out. They closed the roads after I was already half way to work. I told him to give me the ticket if he could catch me,(I was still able to drive he wasn't.) After thinking about it he decided to look the other way if I pulled him out. Gotta love those Ohio Patrolmen;)

Tang, I know what you mean about the lake effect snow; I lived in Vermilion for several years, right on the lake. That is the reason I thought you'd be hammered by this storm moving through.

The police closed the roads several times when I was there too, and I almost wished they had closed them several other times. I had 4WD, but not as much clearance as the snow had depth.

It was all local roads to Oberlin in those days; the north-south roads stayed clear but the east-west roads drifted shut shortly after the plows opened them.

Panama19, you get used to the snow up here by the lake. I've been doing this commute for almost 17 years now and only missed one day due to snow. The highway patrolman told me if I didn't turn back he was going to give me a ticket:( There went my perfect record.

GasBuddy.com

It figures that a San Francisco newspaper would call for higher gas taxes to help with conservation, but then doubt it's effectiveness. So then, what is the point other than to reveal their stupidity - YOU'VE GOT IT, THEY JUST WANT TO GET INTO YOUR WALLET AND SPEND IT ON THEMSELVES. Those folks up in SF help give California it's bad name.

hisxlnc, did you notice the two articles on the list today, one claiming that prices didn't change driving habits and the next one claiming that miles driven has declined for the first time in 25 years?

The world looks differently through different political lenses, it would seem. Government actions (price controls) caused shortages and rationing in the '70s, which naturally caused a greater drop in fuel use than the high prices did recently, but this point was missed by the SF Chronicle article; this article favored higher gas taxes to reduce fuel use but doubted its effectiveness.

People who believe that the government is the answer tend not to remember the pain and disruptions to the market caused by a heavy government hand.

50/50 local roads & interstate. Gas prices here took a big jump in the last 2 days. Most stations up about 10 cents a gallon, with the ones I usually report in the $2.099 to $2.239 range.

50/50 local roads & interstate. Weather here not as bad as predicted, yet. 30 degree temperature drop from yesterday, and lots of wind gusts. Sunny for now, but thunderstorms predicted for later. Too warm for snow, which is good, because localities have no plows and VA drivers are lethal in any kind of bad weather. 2 inches of the white stuff here cripples everything for at least a week.

50/50 local roads & interstate. Pretty conflicting info in the news items today. Seems things can happen very differently in different parts of the country.

flyboy, it takes grit to walk and bike in the Twin Cities in this weather. Especially when it takes you out over a bridge that long.

Wind whistling over water takes on a special bite.

Runn on MT, considering how close many of those on this BB live to work, highway and local is probably the most practical alternative of the lot.

I think that if you sorted them by distance of commute the interstates would lead the longest range category and local streets and roads would dominate the shortest commutes (unless you added bike/walk as a category).

hisxlnc, that sounds like it will favor the local road commuters if we get a glut of inexperienced 18 wheeler drivers on the interstate.

On the other hand, enough incidents will probably encourage more ICC regulations and police attention.

These things tend to level out over time. It can get interesting over the short haul though.

Tang, glad to hear that the snow missed you. When I heard about the Chicago airport shutting down I thought about what that would do to your 70 mile commute.

It would probably give me the day off, but then I haven't driven in snow and ice for a while.

50/50 local roads & interstate. I recently read where the trucking industry is predicting a critical shortage of drivers (100,000 or more). When any industry has a big shortfall, they tend to lower the standards. Combine the mass retirement of the most experienced and professional "baby boomer" drivers with an influx of new less trained and less experienced drivers, and things could soon get a lot more exciting on the highways.

Other.

I ride a bicycle. It's getting colder and motorists, who pay far too much for their fuel, are not careful about things that don't threaten them.

I use a bicycle/walking path, to the bridge over the Mississippi, and walk and ride from there.

Usually all highway. Running late today so I took back roads but found two of them to be underwater and impassable. Ended up back on the highways I usually take. Much riskier to speed on those.
