I've never seen one, but I live in a big city where it would disrupt traffic. I think there should be more of them regardless of the traffic. People who drink and drive should lose their license on the FIRST offense.

We rarely drive after dark any more. I'm more apt to run into a checkpoint for a criminal vs drunk driver in MI.

DUI checkpoints have recently been shown to be ineffective in reducing accidents and even arresting drunk drivers; "saturation" police patrols (lots of police cars on the streets) are more effective.

I have seen one up the road, so I make a U-Turn. I don't drink and don't need them wasting my time. Besides, they LOVE to look in your car for some reason to detain you for a car search. (I do like IBC Root beer.) From an Ex-officer.

2coolhipdude, your attitude may get you shot someday. You are as bad as the dummies who refuse to pull over for an ambulance because they "don't have to". Some years back there was an idiot in Alberta with the same attitude. He didn't stop for what he thought was a checkpoint, but it was actually a check for an escaped criminal, "armed and dangerous". He stopped pretty quick when one of the cops, my cousin, pulled his gun and aimed it at the head of the pea-brained driver. Police have no idea why you are running a stop, you could be an escaped criminal, or driving a stolen car, or running from the corner store where you just shot the clerk, or you just don't care that the checks are for the protection of all of us, including you. It is very disturbing that there is actually an increase in the number of drunks being caught, that is an increase in the number of people who don't give a crap about the lives of others.
43 years I have been driving, and I can't understand the attitude of people who somehow think a drunk driving check is somehow an infringement upon their rights. I bet people with that attitude would scream like mad dogs about lack of enforcement if they had a spouse or child killed by a drunk. Drunk drivers on the same roads as me, endangering my life, are a gross infringement on my right to stay alive. I happily give a few minutes to let them see I am not drunk behind the wheel.

Around here those check points are random although they are stepped up at holiday times. I don't drink and drive so I am the usual driver which is why husband takes me out now instead of meeting the boys at the local watering hole like in the good ole days. Smile Anyhow they check insurance etc and advise you of road conditions or if you have a burnt out light etc. Most are very polite as they offer a word of caution advising one not to drink & drive. One Sunday afternoon, I also have experienced a belligerent young officer parked opposite where a hall shower was being held. He was bound and determined that I must have had something in my coffee. when I kept insisting all I had drunk was black coffee, he said no punch, no wine, no nothing just black coffee & kept shaking his head in wonderment or confusion ......... he claimed no one drank black coffee

never have seen one in my 40 years of driving [mainly in the Pacific Northwest].
I have seen Saturation Patrols [I call them 'packs' of WSP] 12+ cars and one radar to catch speeders in the Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia area. They do this for 4-6 hours and then move on to another area.

2coolhipdude,
You and I are basically on the same page... but I would have phrased it differently. My poll answer is "N/A".
Wisconsin is one of twelve states in the US were drunk "driving checkpoints" are not legal. As for it being "unconstitutional"... If "we" (the state of WI) want check points... the US Supreme Court says that they are constitutional...so you might get in some trouble should WI ever startup a drunk checkpoint program and you ignore it.
If you don't want to stop for a law enforcement officer (checkpoint or no)... they'll probably give you some extra attention then if you'd stopped for a few minutes and talked to them...
With all that said it seems unlike WI will be allowing "sobriety checkpoints" in the near future according to this article from JSonline.com http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/36514324.html

I must be old or something. I've never even seen a DUI checkpoint. Not to say I've never driven when I shouldn't, but must have been lucky - no stops, no crashes.

They are not deterrents. They catch a few dumbasses. An observant cop on patrol is much more efficient than any checkpoint.

We have driver's license check points that also check for alcohol. They are common place and the only ones that have to worry are those who have been drinking and driving, which is against the law anyhow. If you DON'T drink and drive, than you have nothing to worry about. I live in North Carolina.

Never seen one and never would stop for one. The reason this is not a common occurrence in all states is that it's unconstitutional. Police can't stop you just for sh!ts and giggles. My sister lives in Indiana and has seen them from time to time.

I dream of a day when people will go to a bar or restaurant and they would be required to sign a contract stating that they will not allowed to drink over a 'certain' amount of alcohol. The 'certain' amount of alcohol will be predetermined by the FDC or some federal agency.

I am sure glad all this excitement is happening nowadays - and not 25 years ago. I am absolutely certain I have been drunk by the standard set by law in my younger days. But, I have never been in an accident. I moved to within a mile of work an stay home most of the time. There was a time a couple years ago I saw a checkpoint ahead (I hadn't been drinking) and so I turned left and went the long way home just to avoid the line of cars. Bottom line, you could make alcohol illegal and still get killed by a drunk driver. (or a bullet from an illegal fire arm) I really like the comment about bars having parking lots too - good point. AND they don't have a place for taxis to wait like at the airport. LOL

If you can't drink and drive, why do bars have parking lots. That's funny. You know what else is funny, AZ has drive thru liquor stores.

Waste of tax dollars when conducted during non-holiday days on a work week at 7 PM. It sounds like cops are on a power trip here. They make 250,000+ in the SF Bay Area. The highest paid cop I've seen makes over $400,000 and he's not even the Chief. Don't believe me all the evidence is at http://www.sfgate.com/data They can extort so much money because the unions back them up.

I went through one this past fall on my motorcycle. I had not been drinking, but they were also checking license and insurance cards. But the officer said he knew how much trouble it was to get to that stuff on a motorcycle (stop the motor, put down the stand, get off the bike, open the storage department, etc.), so he just let us through.

Previous to that experience, I was playing in my dart league one fateful evening. Normally, I would have had a few beers and a couple of shots over the course of an evening. For some reason, didn't feel well, bad stomach, whatever, I didn't feel like drinking and drank water and soda all night.
On the way home, I was detained in a DUI checkpoint. The officer asked me where I had been that evening and I told him that I had been playing dart league. He asked me if I had been drinking, which I had not. He said he found it hard to believe that I would be hanging out in a bar playing darts and not drinking. The rather obstinate officer got all up in my face and my business trying to detect any odor he could. I said I'll take any test you want, I have not been drinking. He was not happy that he was wrong and let me go!

Funny story, my wife and I were driving home from the bar one night. When we came upon a DUI checkpoint on our route home. We had both been drinking, but she less than I, so she was driving. I had her pull into the Starbucks on the corner and go through the drive-through. When we left, we went around the block in the other direction and found a new way home! She may or may not have been close to the limit, probably not, but we didn't want to take the chance that she was!
We got pretty lucky!

Sargette, talking on a cell phone during a cell phone roadblock takes as much stupidity as drinking from a liquor bottle during a DWI roadblock. On the other hand, if talking on a cell phone while waiting on line impairs your driving, you shouldn't be allowed out of the parking lot. I'd rather be safe than hit by a sober person who is not talking on a cell phone.
