I have developed the 10 cent rule: If a distant gas station has a price that is at least 10 cents cheaper that a "near" gas station then I will go to the distant gas station; Any amount less than 10 cents will cost me more in extra mileage than I would save in a reduced price.

If one of them honors a certain reward program it's 2% off. If not I'll go with convenience.

I own two trucks. The station that cares american express will get my business. Some times the pump will only take up to $75.00 a one time. I have to reinsert the card to get a fill up. If the station down the street will allow me to fill up in one card insert I will go to that staion.

Service I will not pump gas as I feel the prices are still to high and anyplace I buy gas should have to pay someone to pump it with a smile.

When the gas stations are within reasonable price ranges, then convenience has the highest priority.

BRAND gas is better.
When Arco premium was Between $1.40-$1.50 I conducted a test to see which brand was cheaper. Cheaper in the sense of Miles per gallon and not just the visible cost per gallon. I was driving a 1990 Ford taurus with a 3.8 liter engine that had 91,000 miles. 2 oil changes in 40,000 miles. I had a cracked head and used a aluminum stop leak for the last 8,000 miles before i sold my car. I know, i should treat my cars better.
I drove an average of 175 miles per day. My job is Field Supervisor for a property mgmt co. The test lasted 1 month the first time and 1 month the 2nd time.
The Results were as follows: 1st test- Arco vs. Chevron- chevron at .10 more per gallon than Arco- Arco Mileage- 16 mpg mixed 60% hwy 40% city Chevron Mileage- 19 mpg 60% hwy 40% city
2nd test-Chevron vs. 76- Chevron and 76 at more than .02 higher at 76 but mostly the same price. Chevron Mileage- 19 mpg 60% hwy 40% city Union 76 Mileage- 22 mpg 60% hwy 40% city AND right away after putting in the union 76 gas i felt the engine had ALOT more kick with less pedal.
Now that gas prices are twice what it was when I conducted the 2 tests, it is more cost effective to buy 76 gas instead of arco.
If you use arco for the cheap price, you might want to consider your own test. but bypass the chevron test. go straight to the 76 test.
I couldn't find a chevron when i filled up with 76 gas while in Redlands, ca. That's what started the 2nd test.
I hope this helps everyone out there that go for the ARCO, thrifty, valero type gas just for the price.

My Tucson gives me 30 mpg with Shell, BP, Marathon. So if any of them is on sale I am there. Speedway, which Marathon bought & then sold, gives me the pings. Getgo has one good new station in Cleveland (W117 & I90) which also has $5 carwash, then I go when I get $1 off each gallon on a fillup of 15+.

I used to think convenience. Now I think shortest line (thank you jbehselich) But I'm thinking both reasons are pretty much the same.

Can I turn right out of their lot? Often it's also the brand. I did like it when Sunoco had teamed up with CAA - but now I refuse to carry gas cards for every potential gas station I might stop at...

ə when i am amongst places i know, i choose the one which is most amenable to barefoot customers. when on the road, there are a few i try to avoid, but most of the time don't care too much since i won't be going there again. ə

I'll patronize one brand locally as long as the price is not higher than other neighborhood stations, as I get 5 cents back per gallon by using their credit card

I get 5% back by using the BP Visa Card from Chase. I buy my gas at BP so long as the difference is 6 cents or less. If it is a 10 cent difference, I will go to the cheapest place, and use Costco's American Express card for 3% back.
Yes. For me it is the best rewards.
