No, people will not pay for insurance so I know they will not keep the maintenance of a camera up.

Backup cameras should be optional equipment. Any mandatory equipment added increases the price of the vehicle.

NO, just another sensor to malfunction then the driver has no idea how to back up just usin their mirrors. Learn how to drive correctly.

Yes. Anytime a safety feature can be made available to the masses, it's a no brainer. That said, it doesn't replace the existing tools we use (mirrors, common sense, etc). It's just another tool that can save lives. We have a back-up camera for our BMW X5 and it is extremely helpful.

back up cameras are a tool ONLY, do you back up only using one of your mirrors, I hope not. It is nice to have a back up camera, they should have a more convex lense, so you have 170-180 range to see more, but it should never be used alone. P.S. government made side and rear view mirrors mandatory, right. what ever helps.

I know that this does not address all backup accidents, but one fairly easy thing a driver can do to reduce backup collisions is to reverse the car when parking into a stall.
When you park, you know what the conditions are when you park. You don't know what the conditions will be when you leave. Kids may be playing, another car may be parked too close to yours or behind you, pedestrians may be walking behind your car, something may lie near your bumper or tire, etc.
Since you have to reverse anyway if you go head-in to get out of the stall, why not reverse when you go into the stall to begin with?
Plus, you can get out of the stall easier and quicker, especially if someone else is waiting for your stall.
Again, this will not reduce all backup accidents, but it will reduce some.

No NO NO, if people are so stupid that they can't look before backing up then they shouldn't be driving. If someone wants one let them put it on themselves.

No! If they become mandatory next it will be jail time if you back over a quick moving kid. Give the government an inch and they'll take a mile.
On the other hand the camera companies must love the idea.

The problem with backup cameras is people tend to rely on them too much and don't bother looking around. Cameras have blind spots just like everything else.
I was in a new vehicle last year with a backup camera. Driver started backing up watching the backup camera screen but didn't see a taller vehicle on the screen on it at all that was behind us to the side, we saw it at the last minute but by the time we told him to stop it was too late and he got a lovely dent in his brand new car. Simply installing backup cameras may not actually make things any safer. Drivers MUST be aware of their surroundings at all times with or without a camera, it is their responsibility.

We don't need big brother telling us what we need! Offer it as an option for those who can't see behind them. The less regulations the better.

No. More reliance on other electronics allows for more error. Only a full 360 visual check should be the habit of everyone backing up a vehicle. Also, while walking up to your vehicle, take a quick scan of what is under, around and behind.

Last year I bought the top-of-the-line version of the Nissan Rogue. The nav system also included a backup camera. I didn't think much of it at the time, but this is the BEST option on the car (which has everything you can get on a Rogue). Try it -- you'll become a believer.

Just sick and tired of all the technology mandates that the government considers... Back up cameras. forward cameras..... black boxes. If it makes sense, let people decide on whether or not they want... not mandates

Navystore said "To many people back up and don't look where they are going, causing lots of accidents."
What makes you think they will look at the CAMERA? And, if they do look and focus on the camera, what makes you think they will use the REST of their senses (that they are apparently lacking in the first place)?
This is a misguided mandate in the name of safety that will not be the best solution. These cameras are 2d and low quality (at least what they will mandate to keep the price down). It will NOT [or more accurately SHOULD NOT] replace the other things a good driver should already be doing. Users will have their attention buried in their dash rather than the world around their car. Back up sensors are better, but not back up beepers (ones that beep to warn others rather than warn the driver that something is there) IF the number of accidents backing up are sufficient to warrant that feature.
We need to have people become more aware of the world around them, That means stop walking while texting, with earbuds and being unaware of where you are. That means PARENTS watching and taking responsibility for their kids and not letting them wander unattended while they return to the car where they forgot something because they were not attentive. That means parents teaching their kids to not play around cars - especially hide and seek. That means drivers using their FULL senses and COMMON SENSE when driving and especially when backing up.
MANDATORY BU CAMERAS - HECK NO!
Back up sensors, maybe....

yes, for camera on while you were on the road.in case you were involve in card accident, it will use as an evidence who was at fault at the accident. I guess, the insurance company be consider to lower the monthly to have this camera built in the vehicle. NO, if it way too costly , if insurance company stays and do not reduced our monthly premium. I guess we should never depend on this back up camera at all times, as we still have to keep on eye and be responsible driving

It's more dangerous to park a sedan next an SUV or Van because you can't see around them and vehicles passing you in parking lots can't see you because your vehicle is shorter than ones next to you! Don't see where backup cameras would help this. Should be areas reserved for sedans in parking lots like in parking ramps.
