I've joined a carpool
I've looked into joining a carpool
I've asked someone to join my commute
Someone asked me to join their commute
None of the above (but I've thought about it)

Carpooling is not an option for me b/c I live in a very rural area. This also means that public transportation does not exist where I live--so that is not an option, unfortunately, or else I would use it. However, I do feel better about the fact that my job is only 7 miles away. I also do things to help conserve my fuel and my money spent on fuel: try to limit my trips to town and combine errands on one trip when possible, take my lunch to work and not leave work for lunch, let my car coast down hills and let it coast as far as I can without holding up traffic, use a/c only when necessary, and definitely not speed or even go less than the speed limit when not holding anybody up. My family also has not traveled for vacation at all ever since gas sky rocketed a few years ago b/c we can't afford the cost of the fuel.

I have been riding my Honda XL500 to work as much as possible. Since April it has averaged 56.5 MPG and I have saved approximately 2/3 of my fuel cost verse driving my car.

Like a lot of people, I imagine, my home is off the beaten path and my work is as well -- no public transportation or car pooling is available to help me.

What have I done to conserve gas/boost miles per gallon...
I make as few trips as possible...ONLY when necessary. I make lists of all things that need doing and do them all in one trip when at all possible!
(When you are LOW/NO income disabled you have to make a lot of changes)like these and more..maybe even change political thinking!

Everyone seems to be combining so many errands (picking up kids, grocery shopping, etc) after work that it's impossible to carpool.

Slowed down from 75-85 to 60-62 on the interstate.
Stopped racing everyone to the next red light.
Started using Marvel Mystery Oil.
Started tracking MPG.
Changed the air filter.
Turned off the AC.
Boycotting stations that always hawk the price of gas.
Thinking about removing the toolbox and going with a bed cover on my truck.
I stay at home on the weekends more often.
Do my shopping on the way home to avoid extra trips.
Stopped driving 110 miles roundtrip to see my mom once a month. Yes, I feel guilty about this one.
Stopped letting my son borrow the truck and returning it on E!!!!!!!!!

I am lucky enough to be retired. Now that I'm on fixed income, I have to watch every penny. We don't drive as much as we used to, can not afford it.

Gave up driving to work, taking the bus. Switched to biking 10k to work, wow saves gas and outrages downtown parking fees.

I've been asking people to join my commute, however, many people are reluctant. I have found people just can't give up their car, even if it means saving money!

Actually I did join a commute to my new job by getting one near my wife so we could ride together. But I was working from home at my last job.

isn't 'joining a commute' the same as 'joining a carpool'?

many people have marginal 'convenience' issues as to why they cannot carpool. Bend a little, people.

as others have said, There should have been more choices ...

I guess the thought of public transportation is so revolting that it wasn't even offered as a choice here. What a sad comment on the state of our system.

I have not been able to car pool as the staggered start time where I work just doesn't match those who live in my village and work the same place. I have considered the Bus but their reduced service for weekends means I don't fit again. So I bought a scooter (75 mpg versus 20 mpg), shaved 4 miles Round Trip from my commute and am on the wait list for a Smart 4Two. That little bug will be in the 33<44 mpg range.

Your question is not framed correctly. Carpools are not the only way to reduce gas use. Personally, I ride my bike to work. I didn't see that option listed in your question.

Comuting is a good idea if you don't work overtime or have to turn down overtime because you have a rider. Buses in our area haven't gotten up to speed yet because there aren't enough of them on the road except summertime. I also cut down on trips and only go if I can complete several tasks on one trip.
