When the world ends in 2012 we pretty much won't need fossil fuels, cars, food, . . .etc.

Why are prices so high? Whose fault is it? I know the reasons are varied, but you are missing out on one KEY area; Speculation! This is the single reason that the current prices for gas have spiralled out of control. Here is a good link: http://www.stopoilspeculationnow.com/

If we can put a man on the moon in 10 years we can find an alternative to fossil fuels in 10 years. It will take a national effort maybe the size of the lunar program. Its not impossible to do.

It is not time relative. It will not happen until the price of gas exceeds our ability to afford it >$10?
Whenever we talk about lowereing the price of fuel we are really talking about killing the alternative fuels.
It is painfull to say it, but expensive fuel has the positive effect of causing people to seriously reconsider their fuel gluttony. Living more than 10 miles from work? 10 trips a day soccer moms? V8? Consider Bicycling now and then?

I do not think this will happen. The oil companies have to much money to keep other tech. on the shelf.

I really think that if the right elected officials, private and public interest groups that support alternate fuels can get hold we could see a start to getting away from fossil fuels by 2012. Rockport, MO. has already been self sustained by wind power as is the immediate surrounding NW MO area. We can do it, we just have to demand the right people and not lay down and let oil continue to bleed over us.

ə i said "by 2020" in the poll, but that probably is not realistic. i do think we will no longer be dependent on _foreign_ fossil fuels by then. but then i probably won't live to see 2020 anyway. ə

I'm not sure. I find it amazing that in 30 years we have taken computers from room filling behemoths to cell phone size, but can't find a viable alternative energy source.

The time is sooner than we think it will be. The sooner we start to plan for getting off our oil addiction the better off we will be.

What is all the fuss since the 70's we have been making alternative fuels it started with pigs. Since then we have gone back to it and act like it is the worse thing we could do. Use up all the corn we have so we do not have any to give to the countries that need our help. What is the phrase give a man a fish he will eat for a day teach a man to fish and he will survive a life time. So teach them what to do and keep our stock here so we can survive. We need to save the fossils and get rid of the old goats that are causing all the trouble.

My opinion? When we run out of fossil fuel. Just how long that will take is dependant on whether of not we look for alternatives.

In the early 70's, they (the media and "leaders") were saying gas engine, internal combustion vehicles would be gone in less the 10 years. Well, that change didn't come about on time. There are still resources out there to be tapped/drilled and refined; some must be in our back yards.

2030. The oil is running out and the prices will continue to rise. The move away from oil will be market driven - a majority of people will not be able to afford it.

maybe I am optimistic.. or maybe I am pessimistic...I am hopeful that we will no longer be using fossil fuels (for the benefit of the earth)but then too I am fearful of the money mongers who will capitalize on the high costs of fuel and horde it to increase the costs... whatever ,,,,I will do all I can in the next twelve years to go completely off the grid..fuelwize which fires both electric energy and automotive fuel. By the Way.... doesn't anyone else out there see the correlation between the burning of fossil fuels and the real intense weather we are experiencing.???... just to add my two cents worth... the earth will repair herself...of this I am sure..... and if it takes ridding herself of mankind to do it, then that is probably what she will do....

Those of you who are saying 2030 or before are being too optimistic. I said 2040, but that's probably a little optimistic as well. As long as there are people making serious money on petroleum products I don't think we'll ever be rid of it, and the technology that can help us reduce our dependency will be bought up by the same industries. I know, many of you will think I'm one of those naysayer conspiracy theory creeps... I hope I'm proven wrong! I'd like to be close to the front of the line when the government starts subsidizing all-electric or hybrid cars.

A lot can happen in 10 years the way technology keeps evolving. Hopefully the market will lean in another direction and we can demand a change.

Fossil fuels will always be a viable and important source of energy for us. No amount of wishful thinking will change that. The important goal is to have a sustainable mix of energy sources to insure that we do not suffer at the hands of unscrupulous energy suppliers, foreign or domestic.
