We have an opportunity to run an advertising campaign involving floating ads of an online car dealer. We typically do not allow any floating ads or pop-ups but if this was capped a maximum of one ad per user per day would it be acceptable? We were
Yes - Run the campaign
No Way - No floating ads
Not sure

I appreciate that it would be nice to help defray the costs of running this site, but we come here for quick checuks on gas prices. Would hate to have towade through pop-ups.

As long as there is a way to close it once I'm done looking at. And a big prize give-away is always great!

Pop-up ads are one thing. One a day per customer would be fine.

Floating ads are terrible! I have experienced them following my movement around a web page, always getting in the way of what I want to see. I don't mind seeing one, but if I choose to ignore it, I want to be able to do so.

I have also had floating ads with X's in the corner - supposedly for closing them. Good Luck! They keep popping back up. They still get in the way, especially if I am viewing a 1-screen web page.

Pop-ups I can deal with as long as they don't return when I close them.

I am passionately against floating ads!

Whether you should do it is a business decision that should be made by management, not by the members. It can always be done on a short-term basis and either extended or elminiated based on member opinion (if management thinks that overwhelming member opinion one way or the other is that important).

While I don't like pop-ups and am irritated by them, if it provides revenue, well, that's what management has this website for, isn't it? To garner revenue?

That said, I would not give away a "$5,000" prize just because people have to "put up with pop-ups". Why should members be rewarded for a management and business decision? If there were several prizes of gas cards, fine, but who should be eligible? Those that have been members the longest? Those that have the most points? Those that have been members for six months or a year but still haven't achieved 10,000 points? Sholuld (just as an example) members such as gasimusmaximus, who only 1 message post (and that wsw June 12, and who has only 570 points since joinging June 12 - or briangeo, who joined in Marcy 2008 and in that time has 3 message posts and a total of 310 points (doesn't seem like a lot of contributing to the website). Should those members have the same eligibility and chance for a "high dollar" prize as other, more dedicated, members?

Bottom line: Pop-ups, I don't care. I can tolerate them because my purpose here is to learn gas prices (and contribute prices for the benefit of other members), and the income earned from them is deserved by those that have made this website available to me. If I'm that opposed to pop-ups that management thinks makes business sense, I'm free to view gas prices on other websites; they may not be as useful, as complete, or as timely as Gas Buddy, but that would be my choice, wouldn't it?

I have always hated pop up adds! They slow down your pc, especially if you don't have cable or dsl. They take too much time to load or get in the way people get tired of waiting for them to load and it leaves a cookie or tmp file on your hard drive. When you get way too many tmp files on your pc it slows it down and can cause crashes. SO I say Nooooooooooooooo to pop ups!!!!!

POP UPS? MAYBE.....BUT ONLY LIKE ONCE A WEEK OR SOMETHING.AND IF YOUR GOING TO GIVE AWAY PRIZES I WOULD SAY PLEASE GIVE AWAY MANY SMALLER PRIZES RATHER THAN ONE LARGE ONE. LIKE FIFTY $100 PRIZES INSTEAD OF ONE $5000. MOST IMPORTANTLY IS TO KEEP THE NUMBER OF POP UPS TO A EXTREME MINIMUM

I wouldn't want the pop-up, but most blockers would make it not noticeable. The $5000 prize give away would be very cool though.

I immediately delete the occasional ad that gets through my blocker. They irritate me to the point that I wouldn't buy anything off them, even if I did take the time to read them.

I voted unsure.
members are going to complain even with a prize of $5,000. If the cash was going back into this site which is a great service and other members would accept one and only one floating ad I would accept this only not floatiing ads in the news articles. I like to scan those and a floater blocks views.

I vote - NO WAY. That is one of the things I enjoy most about this site. I do not have to deal with the silly and annoying pop-ups to get to the information I need. It would be an extra step and a big hassle. I have enough 'problems' with my internet access being slow - I am VERY glad I do not have to deal with the frustration of pop-ups on this site.

NO ADS, we have enough of them on other web pages. I try to stay away form sites that have floating or pop up ads. They are just a pain always having to click on them to get rid of them. That's why I go to other pages that don't have them!! You have enough advertisement already.

I too post from work and popups or floating ads would get this site blocked from work computers.

People being blocked from work use would likely cut down the posting and updating that make this site so current and helpful, so the introduction of these ads seems it may greatly hinder its use and usefullness.

Besides--those types of ads do suck. I can truly say I have NEVER seen one that I clicked on to use or followed up on anything in any one of them. They are pure annoyance.

If it comes to you going out of business or floating ads then its got to be the adds. For now I like no adds as long as your finances to run the site are okay. Even if it costs the members a few dollars a year to be members and to sign on to the site. For now though I wouldn't change anything.

Seems to me there are 3 reasons why people use this site:
1.) Ease of finding the cheapest gas near their home quickly.
2.) Ease of earning points by posting prices and opinions.
3.) Chat Rooms

Adding pop-ups to your site will slow the process for most quite a bit. Many sites wanting to do this require the user to allow pop-ups and that is a definate turn-off.

If pop-upos are a necessity, right now I am undecided as to whether I would "regular" this place, but 100 - $50 gas cards sounds better than 1 -$5000 grand prize.

I really hate popups, but especially floating ads!

If I were to receive $0.50 every day for putting up with one or two floating ads during my browsing of GB, then I would accept allowing the ad(s).

I don't like the "Big Prize Giveaway" ether. Ether pay everyone that visits the site equally, or don't allow the ad.

Of course GB needs to make your cut as well, and I can understand the hassle of having everyone's info. Like all these AdClick places, only make a payment once you reach $10 or $15.

Thats just my opinion of it. I'm sorry if someone else already touched on it this way, as I haven't read most of the responses yet.

Ok, I read a couple pages of responses. Here are my thoughts.
1. Charge a dollar to join for no ads.
2. Ask the member if he wants to be considered for a prize while responding to polls therefore be subject to one pop-up per day.
3. Get a guarantee for the ad to be clean of spyware ect.
4. Not just one prize.
5. Nothing makes me leave a site faster than a pop-up that I can't click off easy.

PLEEEEEEESE, No pop-ups. They are the most annoying things on the internet. Not to mention they are the number one source of viruses on the net and NOT trusted by most people. I understand the need for income but, can't we think of another , less annoying, way?

We operate graphic studios and manage a number of sites for our clients.

If the goal is to make money: GO FOR THE FLOATING/POP UP, if the goal is to serve the public (i.e. highest participation) then DON'T GO THERE as the site logs we've reviewed reflect that clients who push floating and pop up ads and notices have a much much higher 'hit and run' visitor score.

FWIW the 'hit and run' time seems dependant on how fast the visitor can click a mouse. (the revist rate is near zero)

An aside: we've found that visitor access through managed systems (typically corp.) very quickly goes to zero as soon as pop ups and floating ads are turned on.

ValetMom says that the Firefox adblockers would stop the floater ads. However, both my home and office computers are running Firefox 2.0.12 and the floats get through all the time. And I have stopped going to sites because of them.

I'd rather pay a membership fee to use the site than be subjected to floats.
