Undecided.
A couple of Radio Stations won't allow me to run radio ads for CalgaryGasPrices.com because of advertising on the website(country 105.1 fm CKRY (Calgary) and 106.1 fm The Range (Airdrie) --- so I picked up a new station 97.7 fm from Calgary Alberta Canada The best "Pop, Rock and Country Station" "in the World" as far as I'm concerned.
However pop-up ads can be blocked by individual computer system(s).

Making sound business decisions rely on a number of factors, not the least of which is getting a lot of input. Thank you for this opportunity.
The other factor is financial. If it makes good business sense, then do it. If not don't.
Finally, try it for a short period of time. Evaluate the results before entering a long term decision.
Whatever you decide, I'll support you.

1) You make the money you need to run this site. 2) Please have "floaters" with ability to turn off or move on -- so that when pressed for time, I can get on site and get off. 3) Price posting should take precedence. 4) By the way, Thank You for this site. Happy Holidays to all.

No, I think they are so annoying. I do have a pop up blocker, but just the last week or two when I go to sign on here I get a pop-up on the sign-in screen, and my blocker does not work. I thought you already were allowing something. ANNOYING!

Absolutely NOT acceptable. I don't care to have a chance to win money or even to amass points. It's all about helping each other get the lowest price for gas.

Floating ads are exceptionally irritating and I would never buy from anyone who was that obnoxious. However, I have a popup blocker that I hope would take care of that problem for me.
I hope.

If you do give away money, let the person who wins pick a charity organization or church or medical ministry or food ministry or school to give it too. I know times are getting tough for people; but I give to a local food ministry every week to help people who don't have money for food or medicine.

I hate pop up, pop under, and floaters nearly as much as the oil prices. If you really want to put them in how about setting them up so registered users can opt out (or block them)

If the owners of this site need to do so to support themselves that is acceptable. To do so to generate prize money is not acceptable. Further members who post regularly should be exempt but users who simply check for prices should see the ads.

I hate pop-ups and floating ads and try my best to block all of them but the pop-up/floating ad programers are one step ahead of the blocking programs.
I view them as an invasion of privacy.

Ads are the most annoying when they try to cover info areas of the page, and your view is compromised. Some do motion to get your attention, but stay in the ad section of the page. The floating ads are the most annoying and you have to hunt for the X to stop them, and don't get the interest level of the bulk of your viewers....only a small, small %. I say please no, unless they stay in the ad section of the page !!!!!!!!

Even though I highly agree with giving to a charity, pop-up ads are terrible. Because every time you flip back to the home page or another page, they keep popping back up and sometimes they cover information that you're trying to see. Sorry I vote "no".

Long time visitor...first time memeber. I prob would have joined sooner if I would have seen better opportunity for free gas. So it seems to me if... 1. the pop up could be easily closed (for those it would annoy) 2. the advertisers have giveavay $$ that could be randomly shared, in increments appropriate to total points earned, as a reward to those who have help to build the site, making it of interest to big $$ advertisers. 3. and contest winners would be chosen by whatever pts, or posts or traffic one would rack up as of DAY OF contest or promo...
So, when someone joins day of, they can win but not as much as someone with more points. (hmmm...bet they would want to keep posting to get more points ....)
This would give anyone who wanted to get involved w/Gas Buddy the same chance as someone who has been involved a chance to win, and reward the posters that have built this site, appropriately.
After all, isn't the drive of this site to get MORE people to post MORE info FASTER?
As stations close or run out, or just change their prices 4 times a day, I know I want to see as much as I can from as many. Wouldn't sharing the wealth be a good thing?
Just one opinion.

Please explain "One per day per customer"?
Does this mean...I log on in the morning....get my floating add.....log off....log back on 2 minutes later...I'm free of the ad for the day?
Not knowing the financial stability of the website....if I'd have to put up with one floating ad to keep the site up...sure.....if it becomes annoying.....well I'm with Panama19....they become annoying and would grow a distaste for the advertiser.....the local C-J allows a floating add from a local car dealership....though I respect the family that owns the 13 dealerships....I really get annoyed by the ad.
Just One Old Guy's opinion.

Unpaid members? That makes is sound like we're doing volunteer or charity work. We're not. We're simply posting prices so that others in our neighborhood learn what the prices are close to where they drive but might not otherwise know about. And they do the same for us. It's not "work" providing this unpaid for "content". Nor is it an "experience." It's something to help each other; that's all; it's no big deal.
Besides, if they had pop-ups or whatever, are you suggesting that you wouldn't use this website and you'd go back to driving around the neighborhoods to find out what the prices are? Wasting gas driving around to find out that you can't find a lower as price? Is your ego that easily shattered you wouldn't use the website because it's "unpleasant"?
Just asking, that's all. Just asking.

Unpaid members provide the content for the site. Please don't make our experience unpleasant and more difficult. There's quite a bit of navigation and ad clutter already and floating ads and/or pop-ups would make it worse.

IMO Pop-ups are not going to get through most filters if people have one turned on. Floaters are annoying until you close the window. There is already advertising on the website so more is just going to add to the annoyance factor. And if someone is in a hurry, they're going to be annoyed quickly. My opinion is - give it a try and if too many people complain about it (and you will quickly get get a feel for it) don't do it. The relevance of the ads to your members would likely help the situation. Also, the cap would be a very nice touch for those who refer to the website more often than once a day. As for the contest: One of your members (sorry, didn't note who) recommended not one prize but several smaller prizes while another was concerned with the people who only contribute due to the contest. The contest would run a specific timeperiod so break it down and have smaller prizes - like a $100 a week - and a grand prize - like $500 or $1000 - at the end. As for DashZippy (if there is someone with that name, I apologize. I just thought it up) only contributing because of the contest - have it along the lines of 5 gas price submissions = 5 entries in the weekly(or whatever) drawing. One entry for the polls and one entry for the forum replies etc. similar to how people get points. Then all the entries for the contest go into one proverbial basket and the "grand prize" is drawn from that. If someone is going to abuse the system, they're going to find a way but at least this way, those that regularly contribute have a "more equal" chance of winning.

No, no, no! This is a slippery slope. One of the things I like about the site is the dearth of advertising. And the ones that are here are stationary. Pop-ups are just a whisker less obnoxious than the darned floaters. I have pop-ups blocked in my browser for just that reason.
