Don't barrel through work zones!

GasBuddy Blog -- States across the country are reminding motorists that safer driving means safer work zones as National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) 2012 kicks off today on Route 141 near St. Louis, Missouri. “Don’t Barrel Through Work Zones” is the theme of the 2012 event.

Missouri and other states such as Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington have also sponsored “Go Orange” campaigns where they light public buildings in orange and encourage citizens to wear the color to show support for NWZAW. In Missouri, more than 90 buildings and landmarks throughout the State have participated in Operation Orange.

Well, the thing is people keep getting killed or hurt in these work zones. Even those with workers crawling all over the zone I see people driving in a hurry. Distracted.

"It's just frustrating at 2 AM on a Sunday when you're driving through an interstate work zone with no workers but you still have to slow down"

If there has been a concrete pour there is somebody there all night. Besides, how much time can you actually lose driving slower for a few miles?

The "kind" of people who barrel through work zones don't pay any attention anyway...they just don't care. They are the bloggers and bad drivers anyway.

"Just slowing down in work zones can get you killed by all those who continue to speed through them."
That's just dumb, and a total devaluation of the lives of highway workers.
"Some work zone speed limits are too high, some too low."
When workers are on the job, there is no such thing as a speed limit too low. Remember, you are surrounded by a couple of tons of steel, they are surrounded by a pair of blue jeans and a hard hat.

Orange buildings! Give me a break! Just drive carefully and demand that governments stop giving licenses to people who do not.

When I was traveling back East, The signs said what that when the yellow lights were flashing it meant there were workers and it stated the maximum speed limit if the yellow lights were on. It also stated if you hit a worker its 10 years in prison., it might of had a fine with that but I don't remember.

Leave earlier so you can take your time driving thru a work zone.
We had a woman nearby that was speeding thru a work zone texting and putting on makeup and said she did not see the barriers for the work zone after she hit and killed a young husband & father. Put her away and throw away the key.

There are a few who just don't care. In a hurry..whatever. Only thing that will slow them down "Before" they kill a worker is the presence of a live police officer or patrol with lights on and ticket book in hand. And that isn't always practical since they are often busy working wrecks and other emergencies. Some states mandate it anyway.

There is a highway workzone near my area. Friday I drove through at the posted 45MPH which seemed high to me considering there were so many men and women working and sort of exposed to the traffic. I noted a lot of hurrying and fast driving. Needed a patrol unit out there. One driver continued to text all the way through and obviously not in good control of her van. A few minutes later a guy putting those little centerline squares in the new pavement got hit. They decided he was dead at first bur an MD driving by rescitated him and last I heard he was in critical condition. I don't think the driver has yet to be cited and I have no idea why or how he was hit. But I think we need to wake up, lay down our phones and be responsible drivers through these work zones.
