CA, OR, WA motorists see big hikes as national average falls

GasBuddy Blog -- We mentioned it was coming a few days ago. Hundreds of you shared the story that we wrote, "West Coast Motorists: Prepare to get clobbered", and clobbered is what you're getting. In an update to that story, so far in the last week, prices have risen sharply. If you're not on the West Coast, skip down to the last paragraph to see what we expect outside this region.

Prices across California are seeing an average increase of 14-cents per gallon in the last week alone, with some cities seeing much bigger increases. Here are some of the increases compared to last Monday:
Santa Barbara, up 17c/gal
San Jose, up 14c/gal
San Fran, up 12c/gal
San Diego, up 13c/gal
Sacramento, up 13c/gal
Orange County, up 17c/gal...

Saw a slight drop in diesel this week, almost even with 87 octane regular price-wise.

w/ the tax that Zuckerberg and others have to pay after today's IPO and stock sales to the state of California, the prices should be dropping like a rock.

Probably just Jerry Brown raising the taxes on each gallon, not a market condition. For cheaper gas, abandon California. You can fix all the problems as soon as the last legislator leaves. If you want something fixed, would you take it to a mechanic or a legislator?

This is temporary like the fact that it is an election year. These prices are about the same as 2008. I hope the prices will drop after the election in November like they did in 2008. Is this a stupid political tactic used to influence votes? The president doesn't set fuel prices. While I'm griping, I'll say fire that annoying woman Brooke Alexander in the TV commercials: . Is there anybody buying a tank of gas because it makes you feel good? Oh, boy can't wait to buy gas and drain my wallet again. She even tries to make fracking sound like it's the freaking best thing ever - lol. Paying an actress to promote consumption of fuel is foolish - lower fuel prices with the money saved by not paying her and saving the cost of tv ads. We buy fuel to get to work and because we need it.

"Average price" as reported on this site today for California vs Arizona (300Mi from where I live) is: California $4.353 vs Arizona $3.777 ($.57.6 difference!).
Can anyone explain the discrepancy to me?

Everyone is talking about the "west coast" is going to get a "beating" by the gas prices for the (near) future. Why wouldn't surrounding states be effected?
Everyone seems to agree that it is because of "low reserves": but, consider this:

I have read that several refineries are down "due to routine maintenance" (and one in Washington state that had some sort of fire damage). If that is the case why don't these highly paid exec's from the oil companies plan these "routine maintenance" procedures during lower usage period times of the year?
Additionally, who benefits from a "price per gallon" tax on gas? ie: the "higher" the price per gallon / the "higher" tax revenue received!

Perhaps the (broke) state of California?

CA, OR, WA motorists see big hikes - you got that right! Fuel prices at 'some' pumps have rose 20 to 30 cents or more per gallon in the last 5 days. Refineries in WA produce less fuel from Alaskan crude and the prices at the pump go up. Three refineries down for maintenance and the price at the pump goes up. There are high fuel prices all over North America!
Unfortunately, 'coming out of the closet' Barry is going to get reelected from people that can't SEE the light, don't know what to do OR don't want a rich, Mormon president and place the blame for high fuel prices on politics.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Our prices haven't jumped up yet, but then didn't drop like in US either...so sitting at 1.289/L or $5.85/gal Cdn.

Thank the Greenies & tree huggers. They should all move to the west coast. Obama wants high prices, too, to discourage consumption while he jets around the country campaigning with our tax money.

That's where most of the people who want to share the wealth live. Let them get a taste of it in reality instead of in theory.
