The Impossibility of Forecasting the Natural Gas Market

Oilprice.com -- Let me start by admitting that the future of natural gas is especially difficult to predict. Commodity forecasting is always a pseudo-science at best. At times it seems that its primary function is to make astrology look respectable.

But America has enormous natural gas resources, roughly a 100 year supply. That supply could be the low cost/low pollution energy source that provides a bridge to a better economic and environmental future. Or it may just sit in the ground for some time.

After 25 years in the oil and gas business I spent ten years working in public policy and politics. In many ways that made geophysics seem pretty straightforward. But I did learn at least one valuable lesson: In spite of all the flowery words, there is no more powerful force for change than the market.

As soon as they find a reliable outlet for the natural gas and get people hooked, the price will skyrocket.

You can't TRULY FORECAST ANYTHING! I mean hell, I can't even forecast that we'll all die someday, because who knows what could happen between 1 second from now & in the next 100 years? I'm sure not going to try & forecast it, cuz like everyone else, I truly have NO 100% accurate idea!

Right now we have over-supply, making prices exceedingly low. Great, right? Not so much, because if the companies can't make money the development will stop. Increased usage in electricity generation and motor vehicles will shift the equation into better perspective with higher (but still very low) prices and a reasonable profit for developers and producers. It's called CAPITALISM, a great system even though it is detested by the current Marxist regime. NObama 2012.

Natural gas doesn't pollute near as much as gasoline and you don't need to refine it either.

It’s actually very easy to predict natural gas prices. It’s like any other commodity. If we have a shift to natural gas as the demand goes up the price will follow. Add to that the fact that “fracking” is under attack the supply will start to go down. Again the price will be driven up even more. We need to understand that the government wants “green” energy and will find a way to make it cheaper than carbon based energy. Because the “green” energy we have now it very expensive they must find a way to increase the price of the other energy sources. They will do that by regulation of the extraction meatheads, by preventing exploration for new gas and oil fields and taxation like cap and trade. Cheap natural gas is a short term thing don’t get sucked into it as a solution.

Too bad they won't develop the Pickens Plan. With all the natural gas we have we could easily convert our entire truck fleet to natural gas freeing up all that oil for gasoline. As long as there's big profit to be made in oil we won't see much natural gas. Too bad.

The article said, concerning "clean coal" - - ""When has so much ever been said about so little, and so much paid for TV ads to say it?""

The answer in one word. Politics.

A VERY GOOOOOOOD and well written article.
