IBM speeds push for 500-mile EV battery

CNET -- Big Blue signs on partners for its Battery 500 Project to design an "air-breathing" lithium air battery that would create a leap in energy density. Ten years from now, range anxiety for electric cars could be a thing of the past.

IBM today announced two partners for a project aimed at building a lithium air battery able to propel an electric car 500 miles. Scientists from Asahi Kasei and Central Glass with expertise in membranes and electrolyte chemistries will join IBM researchers on the initiative.

Called the Battery 500 Project, the goal is to design an "air-breathing" battery that will use oxygen from the air to drive a new type of battery chemical reaction and, in the process, deliver a big jump in EV range potential. The company hopes to have a working demonstration by the end of..

It seems to me that I remember reading that lithium was also good for depression. Pretty uplifting to think you might be able to make it 500 miles on a charge.

Sounds great but how expensive will the end product be? Will average consumers be able to afford it?

Couple this with a small turbo diesel with regenerative braking and you have a 150 to 200 MPG vehicle that will be able to be driven coast to coast.

Good news, but it will just drive up the price of the EV, still take too long to charge, can't take them on a long cross country trip and the batteeries will cost a fortune to replace.

So why can't someone rig up an alternator to recharge the battery while your driving or solar power on the windows to help recharge while driving?

So they might eventually get to 500 miles, they also need to solve the problem of recharging. Waiting overnight to recharge won't work either.

bigrigAZ - "Sounds like the stalling on the keystone pipeline. People are tired of playing games. Gov't could care less. Time to do something Open the pipeline. Stop exporting fuel"

The only purpose of the Keystone XL pipeline is to let the oil companies export the products they can refine from Canadian crude.
