Tenn. looks to reverse sharp increase in highway fatalities

GasBuddy Blog -- After achieving record-setting reductions in highway fatalities, Tennessee is now seeing a disturbing increase in crash deaths in 2012.

Tennessee Dept. of Transportation (TDOT) is reporting that from Jan. 1 through April 27 of this year the state has recorded 288 fatalities; 27 more than what occurred during the same period in 2011. In March alone, there were 104 fatalities across the state compared to 80 in March of 2011. In order to reverse the trend, TDOT and the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) are implementing public communications and more aggressive enforcement of seat belt and DUI laws.

This week TDOT has begun posting a running daily roadway fatality count on overhead electronic signage in the state's urban areas...

They should stop worrying about whether people wear seat belts or not. That's their choice if they want to be stupid and take a risk because it only hurts them. However, Tennessee should crack down on distracted driving, such as texting, eating, putting on makeup and reaching in the back seat to back hand your unruly children. :)

Typically, it's mainly the drivers at fault to the greater extent.

price of fuel may be causing an increase in use of motorcycles ;)

no mention of increased fatalities due to DUI; so why increase enforcement ? Why no increase enforcement of whatever led to causing the accidents . . . perhaps lack of road maintenance ? etc.

I expect the price of gas and oil to plummet with the release of this information.

raise the price of fuel... that will cause a decrease in driving, therefore decreasing the number of fatalities, right?

They're saying Tennessee is ahead for the year, when it's really just the month of March. Still bad, but a bad month can make it look like a bad year.

If police would pull people over for stupid crap they do we'd save so many lives. Just yesterday a car blew a redlight right in front of a cop who was turning left to the same direction. Cop didn't flip the lights on or go after him.

Evolution is at work if the increase is due to a lack of seat belts.

Driving education, patroling, and safe (quality) roads do make a difference with it comes to road accidents.

Penalties need to be greater to curve fatalities. Talking or texting with one hand on the phone should be much more than the $75 slap on the hand they fine around here.

'"Nearly half of this year's fatalities involved motorists who were not wearing a seat belt and we know many of those victims would likely have survived, had they been," said THP Col. Tracy Trott. "Troopers will be out in force and if you are not buckled up you will get a ticket," he added.'

I highly doubt that there is a sharp jump in people not wearing seat belts. The cause lies elsewhere.

And police resources should not be devoted to protecting people from their own safety choices, as opposed to protecting them from each other.
