β30% better milage [sic], 30% higher fuel cose [sic] . . . .β
Fuel cost is typically ~10% more and it is lower than that locally, right now.

It is about time. The modern diesel would be my choice as most of my miles are highway miles.

these diesels have been available in europe for decades, but not here because it would hurt gas sales

all this means is demand for diesel goes up so that price increases too, which in turn means food and other stuff goes up cuz diesel is all that is used in transporting those goods around the USA. Higher prices all around! yippeee!

How does 30% better fuel economy double the range, unless diesels come with bigger tanks 30% better fuel economy equals 30% longer range and with diesel over 10% higher than gas there goes a lot of the economy advantage As the percentage of diesel cars on the road increases, the demand for diesel increases and then supply goes down and the price goes up

Why is it that current generations are so clueless? Most vehicles were due to be diesels by 1990 or so. WHAT HAPPENED? Well, diesel fuel costs SKYROCKETED. And people found out diesel engines are great for trucks, but for cars, they're sometimes more a problem than they're worth. Especially in frigid weather.

they already know it in europe. rented a ford with a diesel engine that got about 70 MPG last trip to england. plus it had all the bells and whistles to boot. it is a shame that detroit is so far behind the eight ball.

Maybe, maybe not. There's a lot of things between now and 2015 that could change and make diesels less desirable.

Diesel fuel is currently more expensive. We could experience more demand of diesel powered vehicles when bio-diesel becomes plentiful. How about kerosene burning cars, why not 100LL AVGAS or Jet A fueled cars?

The whole point of this website is to find the least expensive fuel -- and Diesel is more expensive than gasoline -- so why switch to a more expensive fuel? More plans to get more of the public's money.

Sounds like they are trying to drive the market with this random percent increase in diesel sales.

If gasoline was to continue its upward trek, ALL non-gas vehicles will have their day in the sun. I believe that diesels have been getting a larger market share for several of the reasons noted, but I believe that LNG and CNG vehicles are the wave of the future in Amjerica. Hybrids and EVs wouldn't be as popular as they now are if it wasn't for the Federal subsidies.

I don't get the attraction, Diesel fuel is quite a lot more expensive than regular, like 25 to 30 cents a gallon.

Increased purchase price, increased maintenance costs, increased fuel prices do not justify the marginal fuel savings in my book.

I'll believe it when I see it. That's just three years from now. As long as diesel fuel prices remain elevated due to high demand from commercial diesel fuel users, the general public won't be buying them in the numbers necessary to meet Bosch's expected 1 in 10.
