New gas price alerts, oil identity crisis

GasBuddy Blog -- Just in time for rising gas prices in the Midwest, GasBuddy unleashed a new tool- price hike alerts. It was predicted that prices would rise in a few major areas- Minneapolis, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. Some of you members located in those areas received e-mails (as seen in this post) that warned you to fill up as prices were likely to rise today.

Prices did end up rising in all markets as GasBuddy expected, hopefully saving our members and readers money. The alerts system is being improved as well, and in the future, we hope to send alerts to those who wish in supported areas. For now, only the Midwest will be supported, as prices there are very predictable. Outside the Midwest, prices typically rise slower and are more difficult...

After holding very steady for a long time while oil prices dropped, one station here has recently lowered prices a couple of cents.

good job Gas Buddy--keep coming up with new ideas that help every member. They predicted huge price increases in Ohio and I filled up 2 days ago. I actually paid $ 2.30.9 per gallon in Tiffin, Ohio. It may be September (end of summer) before I see price like that again. The big spike they predicted came true over 2 days instead of one, but I saved enough to pay for a meal at Burger King.

In the Texas panhandle, prices vary according to your distance from the fuel racks in Amarillo for the most part. Some towns are consistently higher than others but generally the farther you are from Amarillo, the higher fuel is.

So, is Gasbuddies taking credit for the price rising? The media can do that as well as speculators.

The way it has been going, we'll be getting alerts every day. GasBuddy has no controll over the oil industry. Their game is called GREED.

The speculators keep pushing up the price of oil until it kills the economy and puts more people out of work.

Emails telling people to fill up now adds to the histeria created by speculation and is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

With the "like clockwork" gas spikes in Montreal and surrounding area, the emails being sent out on a weekly basis would probably crash mail servers! However, the I do like the idea.

This tool proved very useful to me. It saved me 16 cents a gallon on a 23 gallon fill-up. Add that up over a year and my response to Gas Buddy is a big "THANK YOU".

If you predict them they will come. Prices up $0.15 in southwest Michigan. What could have happened for such a drastic increase?

Has it ever occurred to you that the retailers may use this "tool" as a self-fulfilling prophecy?

It didn't save me anything because at the present time I don't need gas. I buy gas very sparingly anymore since I am retired.
