Town's Gas Boycott Leads to Lower Prices

msnbc.com -- Mayor Tim Baldermann and New Lenox residents are seeing gas prices come down for a change after a week-long boycott at the pump.

Prices in the town have dropped as much as 11 cents at some stations, while others have not given in just yet.

On Monday, Baldermann called for a boycott of gas stations in his town after prices hovered between $4.14 and $4.21 a gallon while neighboring towns saw significantly lower prices.

"If it was two cents they would have never heard from me," Baldermann told NBC Chicago Friday.

But prices were 12-to-20 cents higher, so he took a stand.

Marty Durbin, executive vice president of the American Petroleum institute, said the boycott was misguided. He explaining that each station has its own costs of doing business, and that's what led to ...

good for the town to be able to bring cost down, but it won't work most other places.

Good for you guys in New Lenox!!! That's awesome! If Gas were $4.14 - $4.21 here I would be rounding together my town for a boycott too! That is ridiculously high! Not that other parts of the Country aren't higher! But still, we've come down to a LOW of $3.57 here in Mass. & many of the $3.99 - $4.29 stations are now down to $3.83 or around there! I know MANY will say "Not for long", but that's just because far too many people are pessimists! Not that I don't believe they may be RIGHT, but I try to be a bit more optimistic & at least HOPE that Gas will go down & stay down for longer than 1 week! It's almost as if the people that say "Not for long" every time Gas really goes DOWN, WANT IT TO GO UP & don't like to see it down or something....?!? It's odd.. I use a massive amount of Reward Points from my local Grocer & constantly get big discounts, so I don't need to drive far, but I have several options all around me of which station Stop&Shop or Shell Station to use the Reward Discounts at (Up to $2.50 OFF Per GALLON)!! & I WILL drive the extra few miles or more to the CHEAPER Participating Station, if for nothing else, just to reward the Station with the LOWER Prices & give my business to THEM not the more expensive ones! I will go elsewhere even to pay 1¢ LESS! I would LOVE to see most ALL of the BIG NAME Stations go OUT! They tend to be BIG Price "Setters" around here (MA) & I really DO respect the small business, little Gas Stations with the LOWER Prices! That is where I ALWAYS go when I am not using my Rewards Discount! & I still go to Stop & Shop Gas MUCH MORE than SHELL to use my rewards points discount, because Stop & Shop Gas is MUCH smaller of a name than their new partner SHELL. Even though the discount points & program is the same. I would rather support the smaller station. Unless one is LESS $$!

It never ceases to amaze me how the "same" gas can be 10, 20, or more cents different within a few miles of each other...

Boycotts work -- never mind that some of the GasBuddy bloggers shill and say they don't. Act locally.

As long as you're not driving too far out of the way, which will negate your savings; then hurrah for the little guy.

BOYCOTT ARCO/BP/CASTROL !!!!!

To shut off the money gets RESULTS !!!!

Do keep one thing in mind, if all of the local gas stations shut down (like Harrisburg, Oregon) you have the option of driving to the next county for gas !!!

If you only have One gas station, the local population can enact a boycott and get results. But, don't try a Gas Boycott on a national level, it will not work. Do Not drive 20 miles to save a little on a gas fill up.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Matter of principle. I've started driving a bit farther for cheaper gas, about breaking even to reward those sellers.

A regional or National Boycott wouldn't work. New Lenox was able to drive a few miles to the next town to get gas. Depending on the distance they may have loss money temporarily due to the cost of driving further . First you have to have others selling cheaper then the distance can't be so far as to be unreasonable extra cost, or it wouldn't work.

Frequently Gas is 20 cents/Gal less in our State Capital than our town. Therefore I could save around $4.00 a tank. However it would cost me near $22.00 in gas alone to get there. Usually small outlying towns are higher. Maybe their wholesale cost is more or maybe they just know they can charge more & you just have to pay it because it's still cheaper than driving to a larger town near you. Maybe since they sell less they have to charge more per gal to meet the monthly expenses. If so I feel for them but I have to get the best bargain I can for the same product to pay my own bills.

Hey whatever works for that town. I wonder how far the people had to drive during the boycott to buy gas outside of the town.

""Marty Durbin, executive vice president of the American petroleum Institute, said the boycott was misguided. He explaining that each station has its own costs of doing business, and That's what led to the price fluctuations and the boycott in New Lenox.""

The petro Institute VP. is wrong in this case. If you read the whole short article it's clear prices were 12-to-20 cents higher in New Lenox than near by towns. That's not an individual station cost of operation.

Next many stations dropped 11 cents/gal. after the boycott while stations in the near by towns that were lower went up by 8 cents/gal. That would tend to indicate the decrease in price was in response to the boycott not that the price was just decreasing anyway. It might even mean the stations in the next town heard about the boycott, saw increased sales & knew they could get away with charging more still being some less than New Lenox.

Making people aware of better prices along their routes is a good thing. Brings to bear true competition.

I have started to toss my fill ups to the station that is even 1cent cheaper. They lose a 50 dollar sale over 16 cents. Now that is pressure to stay or get low to make the sale.

It's not his boycott it's people using their dollars smarter. If you can drive a few miles further a purchase gas cheaper then why wouldn't you? I do it everyday, Alabama has lower gas prices as they don't charge as much in taxes per gallon so I step over the border and buy my gas.

WAKE UP. GAS HAS GONE DOWN ALMOST EVERYWHERE. I DON'T THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH A BOYCOTT.
