New map showing revised gas-oil drilling prospects in Ohio creates stir

Akron Beacon Journal -- A relatively simple multi-colored map is creating a buzz in eastern Ohio.

Some counties’ residents are ecstatic at the possibility they might be sitting atop lucrative deposits of natural gas/oil products. Others are dismayed to learn smaller volumes of gas and oil might lie deep under their feet than previously estimated.

At the center of what’s happening is a newly released map from the Ohio Dept of Natural Resources’ Division of Geological Survey. It shows excellent drilling potential under much of Stark Co. Large tracts of Tuscarawas, Coshocton and Trumbull counties also rate excellent. So, too, does eastern Portage Co.

Records show landowners can get signing bonuses of up to $5,800 an acre plus royalties as high as 21% on what’s produced by wells. The avg leasing bonus $2,500

what if it wasn't there at all? Sounds like too many people see the short term $$$ signs and not the long term impact.

Would be nice if it was oil, but any energy we produce here at home is better then having to import it.

There better be some safeguards in place or water in Ohio will become poisoned.

Knowing 'where' to drill for good oil reserves is very important. Recovering the oil from the ground and getting it to market is another part. Finding good oil 'pockets' can sometimes be a very expensive cost for oil companies. Are there more earthquakes for Ohio with the possible increase in oil drilling? Protect the ground and surface waters from oil drilling and fracking. All waste water to be treated and Not injected into the ground.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

bsg75 said it exactly how it is! We could drill till the very max - it is a Global Market and that is exactly where the oil would end up being sold!

I know basic arithmetic is beyond the ken of righties, but drilling here/now baby to the absolute max will supply only a fraction of domestic demand, and will have a negligible impact on prices. It is a global market. P.S. YESBAMA 2012. Good luck with Mittbot 2000 herper derpers.

And what if a landowner does not want this? Another Eminent Domain so a corporation can make a profit? Just wondering.

Let's do it. But the greenies will block it. We won't have any green options if we keep getting our oil from the Middle East. Drill baby, drill.

It's not clear that domestic drilling will have a significant impact on (a) oil imports and (2) domestic gasoline availability.

This is because (1) we import such a large amount of oil that domestic drilling would have to increase a huge amount to offset that much of it. Domestic drilling has increased under the current administration but fell under the previous (Bush II) administration, so if the impact was going to happen, it would have already. And (b) we (that is our oil companies) are exporting gasoline as fast as they can, to international markets. Any increase in gasoline production would simply be shipped overseas (cough - China - cough) where a higher price means higher profits for "our" oil industry.

Net, net, the price of gas, although lower just now than a year ago, will probably rise over time.

Good, now to keep U.S. oil products here in the U.S......... No exporting of our natural resources. Spend U.S. dollars here and not with OPEC nations.

I don't know how landowners are going to feel about all of the drilling rigs on their property and all of the problems associated with it. The leasing bonuses might not be a bonus after all.
