Should Indonesia raise fuel prices?

BBC News -- Nationwide demonstrations. Clashes between police and protesters. Women in front of parliament banging pots and pans demanding that the government does not raise the cost of fuel.

The issue of whether or not to raise fuel prices in Indonesia even become a trending topic on Twitter this week - with "Turunkan harga BBM" (Cut fuel prices) becoming a Twitter meme, according to the Jakarta Globe.

Raising fuel prices is politically sensitive in Indonesia, where it's thought almost half the population lives on $2 a day.

But with international oil prices rising above $100 (£63; 75 euros) a barrel, the Indonesian government says it is not able to sustain subsidies for much longer.

sadly, the gulf between the rich and poor in Indonesia is growing even greater and this is not helping the rather volatile situation already in place.

Lower the taxes, raise wages, drop prices on groceries, food, utilities and maybe Americans could live on less per day.

They will have to raise them, but they should probably do it very slowly.

This is fuel for heating and cooking? No one is driving with $2/day wages.

The majority of fuel subsidies go to benefit of the well off, not the poor.

Raising fuel prices is politically sensitive in the USA, too. We empathize with the low wages among the Indonesians and wonder how their government is able to "afford" subsidies. Can the fuel industry there not sustain itself?

How does the situation there affect the USA, if at all? That country is so far away
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesia
and we wonder if they get their fuel the same place we do...

I have been saying this for years.

If everyone paid the real market price for gas plus had a tax to fully fund roads and bridges, demand would go down and so would the real market price for gas.

These people have been led to believe that cheap gas is a right and that is just plain dumb.

Bankrupt the country and have a revolution later or raise the price of gas and have rioting today?

That is the question.

So maybe they should get the government out of it and allow the market to price it.

Guess they should get used to it - if they want the freedoms and lifestyle of the western world, then they need to take the good with the bad. Just like us, if they can't afford it then so be it. Many in the western world have been doing without for a long time as well.

That is an Indonesian problem, not an American problem. We need to fix our own problems first and foremost. We have homeless, starving, welfare problems we can't subsidize but we send billions of dollars outside the country. Should we turn our back on everyone, no, but take care of US citicens (LEGAL immigrants as well) then use what's left to who ever needs money. It is our money to begin with.

That is what happens when the government really controls the price of fuel. Want the government to be responsible for the price of gasoline? Nationalize the oil companies.
