What do you consider is your Gift from God (your high calling)?

1 Corinthians 12

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

14 For the body is not one member, but many.

15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

19 And if they were all one member, where were the body?

20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:

23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:

25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

How about what characters of Christ are being made manifest?

And about gifts, yes, don't get me wrong, I do desire them. But the Bible says one day the gifts will cease, but three things will remain: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love.

God is LOVE. Oh God, I need more of You and less of me. More of Your Love. You are our exceeding great reward...

I think some can become so centered on one of their gifts, or be in a circle of folks where one gift becomes more desirous than another.. The gift should never be more important than the Christ. He is the center and not the gift....the gift will always call attention to the Savior and not to the individual who has the gift.

I know for myself I pray very hard that God will reveal my gifts to me so that I can operate in my gift or gifts.

This is a good question. We did a whole series on it in Sunday School and I'm still searching. Which means I'm still growing. I did learn to differentiate between spiritual gifts and talents, e.g., a wonderful voice for singing songs of praise.

I consider one of my greatest gifts from God to be true Christian friend I met while reading through the Christian forums right here on GB. This Christian friend came to me rather unexpectedly as I have to tell that a Gas Buddy forum would be about the last place I would expect to meet some one who could lead me to grow so much in the Lord.

So take heed you newbies (and you oldies as well), for their are some wonderful Christians here on GB who have the ability to inspire & teach you in the ways of the Lord that you might not even know existed.

So I give thanks to God every day for his gift of Christian friendship.

Genuine Christian friendship also means being truthful even if it may hurt (be sensitive - nobody is perfect!) Jesus calls us His friends and laid down His life for us (John 15).

The kind words & mentoring from this friend have constantly drawn me to learn more of the true teachings of the Bible, not by trying to shove them down my throat, but simply leading by example not only in words, but in deeds. So if God ever comes to me asking my opinion as to whether or not Heavens gates should be opened to them, I will simply say, "dear Lord, how can you even ask such a question? This person was a gift from YOU, and to YOU they should return".

I also wanted to look at the order that one of the verses above gave to gifts of spirit.

Key word..."spirit".. these are not natural talents, although they may play into our natural talents. Sometimes I am amazed at something God used me for and I say...."nope, that is not for me, I do not like doing that." That is when I know it is a gift of the Holy Spirit to use for the furtherance of God/Christ's glory. There will be supernatural results when it is a spiritual gift.

Sometimes it is easier to look at others and see what is their gift, my friends Rogelio and Cicha, in Punta de Mita, Mexico, definitely have the gift of helps.

My husband has the gift of helps, he is not exactly well right now but that does not keep him from mowing and helping our little neighbors who are in their late eighties. He wants to make it possible for them to enjoy where they live for as long as they can.

It's important to differentiate gifts from callings:

Every single Christian is called to live holy, sanctified, consecrated, selfless, dedicated lives. There is no such thing as a "secondhand" Jesus because He saves PERSONALLY and He relates to us PERSONALLY. (That's, of course, no reason for us to shun our Christian brothers and sisters who we are called to share and go through life with...the good, the bad, and the ugly!)

2 Corinthians 5:14-12 (MSG)

A New Life

Our firm decision is to work from this focused center: One man died for everyone. That puts everyone in the same boat. He included everyone in his death so that everyone could also be included in his life, a resurrection life, a far better life than people ever lived on their own.
Because of this decision we don't evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don't look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We're Christ's representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God's work of making things right between them. We're speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he's already a friend with you.
How? you ask. In Christ. God put the wrong on him who never did anything wrong, so we could be put right with God.

There is, of course, callings, often called the "5-Fold Callings" and we, today, have all 5 on the earth (yes, even apostles):

Ephesians 4:11-13 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

I believe some gifts are permanent, like speaking in tongues, or interpreting tongues (I have both) while others like the gift of a Word of knowledge or the gift of healing are given by the Lord at specific times, according to His will. (And when He answers "yes" is an incredible sight to behold!)

I believe one gift is dancing in the Spirit which I've never had but was blessed to be standing next to a little girl, who was around 12, during the worship service in church just last night. She was lost in the Spirit and worshiped the Lord totally cut-off from the outside world and I could feel wave after wave of the Living Waters of Heaven flowing all around us as she worshiped. Then, she would stop and go over to another young person (it was a conference for Jr. High and High Schoolers) and lay hands on them and pray...she did this over and over and everyone she prayed for was deeply touched by the Lord. (I believe she was an intercessor and worshiped in the prophetic.)

So amazing for such a young person...the Lord will give her the nations if she remains in His Hands!!

There seems to be some gifts that are "best gifts".....

"31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way."

....yet we seem to desire the lesser gifts...

What say ye?

I know that some of you are Cessationists, and believe that some of the miraculous gifts ceased when the Word was complete... I think that is worth the discussion so we can all learn how we arrived at where we are about the gifts.

But I also know that some folks recognize the gifts of the Spirit in themselves. They know what God called them for....and they operate within their gift.

Do you believe our gifts change...here today, gone tomorrow...or are they life long? Are you given the gift you need for a certain job and then it disappears....or once the gift of teaching, always the gift of teaching?
