I like the early 2000 era Ford Explorer 4 dr pickups. But I'm very queasy on the engines. Front and rear timing chains plus a third chain. All kept in tension using a plastic rubbing block tensioner. Yuck. This design is begging for major failure. Plus its an interference engine so a broken chain destroys the engine. They are seductive but stay away if considering a used one.

I don't like the high cargo box on the newer ford and dodge 2WD pickups. It is so high it is hard to reach over the side. The chevys are lower by comparision.

1/2 ton pickup trucks in the 1970s appealed to farmers and contractors. That was then. More recently the big three have been chasing after the grocery-getters that want a big truck but also want the creature comforts and fuel efficiency of a car. I think that shift in priorities to suburban driveways has taken a bite out of the simple ruggedness a pickup was once known for. I even notice it on my F-150, which is more "refined" than my friend's 2001, but in other ways less robust, ie. the tailgate can by lifted by a seven year old.

I've got a 1973 F250 custom camper special with the original 390 motor which I rebuilt myself about 3,000 miles ago. Its been a great truck, but I am thinking of selling it because I don't have the room for it where I now live. I hate to see it go. It runs smoothe, straight as an arrow at 80 mph on the highway. You can let go of the steering wheel for a quarter mile on the straightways. I've owned it for nearly twenty years.

We still have our 93 Ranger. Towed a small 5th wheel for 7 years, took it to Alaska, and the lower 48. Never hit, always reliable, never a traumatic failure. Now resting quietly in my garage.

If your truck is in good shape and gets you around -- I think that's the way to go. You can work on many of the engine parts yourself.
