Definitely need one for those -50 Celsius temperatures we get here in Winnipeg on occasion. My '94 Century has never given me any trouble starting or running when it was that cold. Took a while for the windows to defrost though!!

I totally agree in using block heaters. If I had an engine without a block heater I would put one in. You get less start up wear and easier on the starter and battery. I used to plug my engine in on cold nights so I had heat pulling out the driveway when I was working. The factory block heaters are only 400 watts and do not break the pocket book. Putting the block heater on a timer to turn on a couple hours before starting the engine has worked very well for me and had warm heat coming out the vents at start up.
