When going to NYC, consider renting an apartment short term and skip the hotels. There are booking agencies in Manhatten which coordinate this. I've done this numerous times. First time I just answered a classified ad. I got a nicely furnished apartment at Columbus circle for $75 a night. Its cool living like a real New Yorker with your own home (and often doorman) for a week or weekend. Go shopping at one of NYCs superb grocers, come home and cook a meal. Hang with the neighbors.

When traveling in Iowa consider B and Bs, many in the state are really inexpensive -- especially the rural ones -- and the homemade meals at the country inns are fabulous. We find them at .

Good point, Flahusky. I've been seriously amazed at some of the elaborate tents I've been seeing lately.

Another one along that same line that seems almost too obvious to mention is to rent an RV. In this time when air travel has been turned into a degrading cattle roundup, hitting the road with an RV can be a very attractive option, especially if you're a family and the price of the rental and gas is offsetting multiple plane tickets.
