How many here have drove and any of seeing the sights on Route 66? From Chicago to Californian? Were there plenty of camping sites for RV and Truck Campers? Your thoughts please.

I had travelled Route 66 from Pontiac, IL. (about 30 - 50 miles south, southwest of Chicago) all the way to St. Louis, Mo. via sedan. Pretty fun trip taking the trip down parts of the original paving of the stretches of road from when it was first paved as well as the other line ups of the route. Springfield, IL. was a bit confusing for the route if one isn't that familiar with being and driving around that area.

Looks like I won't be making that trip this yere. Will be taking a trip to Tiogard OR to Lincoln CA, Freno Ca, Mesa AZ, Fredericksburg TX then back home to Lecanto FL. Will be 3600 miles both ways. Leaving Jan 10. 2012.

From what I hear there are no clear sings and maps of the route. Any help would be appreciated. It has been ears since traveling route 66. We did it for years in the 50's and 60's. Would sure love to go that way again but planning is a must due to health issues.

Okay thanks. Looking to a possible relocate to the West where it’s not too cold in the winter time and is not a desert area. I like a lot of trees and scenery

PatAZ, that is exactly what I’m talking about. You have been to Williams before? The Grand Canyon railroad tour looks very inviting. How are the winter and summer months (Cold and hot temp's. average) there?

I've heard lot of good things about this route but never had a chance to take the trip. Is there must visit hotspots or restaurant that you should not miss on this route?

Thanks PatAZ, I understand that Route 66 goes through some pretty country in AZ and that there is this site seeing train that takes a tour of the areas. I think in was Williamston but not sure??

Check out books on route 66 on Amazon. We have only been on parts of it.

So TheCruiseGuy is that a yes or a no? Wondering about some of the historic things to see if I was going to travel that route, Rather then just take a freeway and see the same thing every mile. That would be just too Boring!
