We try to go to Las Vegas about once a year. It sure gets a bad rap. You don't have to gamble to have fun. The Speedway is a good side trip and while your there it is worth a few minutes to go see the Shelby plant while your there. Lake Mead to the east and the mountains and Death Valley to the west or Valley of Fire to the north.

Well, Golly Gee! If you go to Las Vegas in summer months, you need to expect some excessive heat!!!! An experienced traveler will check weather conditions into order to know what to pack for comfort, which includes walking shoes, if you plan to do any extensive walking or hiking. Most travelers will take advantage of various resources to familiarize themselves as to what "to do" (besides 'gambling'). One will check places to eat, the various attractions, costs, weather conditions and average temperatures for your travel time, etc. BEFORE making travel arrangements. There is MORE to Las Vegas than casinos, shows, concerts, and the 'heat.' (Remaining just ON the Strip is NOT seeing Las Vegas)!

Las Vegas offers an array of entertainment and sights - IF you research things first. Try seeing a city, especially Las Vegas, that has so much more than Las Vegas Boulevard and Downtown!

Red Rock Canyon offers a leisurely some-12-mile drive and excellent for photography and hiking. The Visitors Center makes a great familiarization stop and educational enlightenment of the desert, (as well as a good-priced gift shop for souvenirs). There one can learn of the various desert critters, including our own Mojave Max and his family!

Try a peasant drive to Boulder City (see the various neighborhoods and subdivisions) and then onto Lake Mead National Park; tour the Lake on the Desert Princess, visit the Marina for a cool beverage or a fine bite to eat. (The Lake is much lower than it was 10 years ago but is definitely worth the many views to park and photograph).

There is always Mt. Charleston is you need to cool off in summer often with a 20-30 degree temperature drop from the city. You can hike, walk, tour the forest area. Or, plan an overnight at the Lodge there.

Visit the Clark County Museum off Boulder Highway (www.ClarkCountyNV.gov/museums) and "step into the past." This is a 30 acre site with a collection of restored historic homes, depicting different periods in history, along with a recreated ghost town and Indian Camp.

Do research before deciding on a destination....as they say, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen....and stay out. Ha!

Anyone knows that temps get a bit toasty from May thru early October. The key is to drink water, not all that alcohol. There is always plenty to do and see in an ever-changing progressive town. Rent a car and get off the Strip; trying seeing the REAL Las Vegas. There are plenty of quality restuarants and normal lifestyles. Try the Springs Preserve, museums, parks.

Kinda remember that what happens here does NOT stay here. We remember all the jerks and flakes and drunks and vulgar people who give the town a bad name when they visit here. We seriously doubt these 'clowns' would act the way they do in their own town.

And....a Prince should act like a Prince!

When we were in Vegas on the first week in June. the outside tem was 108. Compared to the temp in the casinos that is like running into a stone wall at 50 miles per hour !! We saw it once but never again !! Besides there are too many other places we wantto visit and traveling is kinda costly !!

QUOTE :::We saw it all anyways and we aren't gamblers !!:::

Vegas is an excellent jumping off point though. Flights into Vegas are cheap, plentiful and often non - stop. Hotels are cheap. I've stayed in the Bellagio and Ceasars for $120/night. Cheaper than Holiday Inn for decadent luxury.

Vegas is a jumping off point for features in the American southwest such as the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Mammouth Mt and Brian Head for skiing, and at least for me all the cliff dwellings and national parks.

There is plenty for the non-gambler. If you are a hiker, skier, snowboarder, or outdoor enthusiast, history buff, or budding archaeologist / geologist. Vegas is the place to head for. You can drive in any direction and explore.

I was going to do an excursion on my upcoming LV jaunt. Out to the north rim of the Grand Canyon near Page AZ. Looks like the state closes the road though in winter. Drat. I've been to the south rim in winter but never the north at all.

You can see the north rim from the south rim vantage points and people hike there with an overnight camp out. You can't get there easily though. Requires 200 hundred miles driving around.

Love Vegas. Try to go once a year. Usually stay at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay. Lots of great restaurants!

;::::Will be in LV this morning :) Heading to Fry's :)::::

I didn't realize there was a Fry's in LV! I'll be in town in 2 weeks. First stop will be a visit with a shopping list! I like Frys but only get into the store while on the road. Most of the best buys are instore only.

Too bad they don't have an IKEA too.

Heading to Vegas around St. Valentines day for a wedding. But....I'm going a few days early.. in order to go snowboarding at Mammoth Mt in California - combine business with pleasure. Heyheyhey

Will get a rental and drive the 300 miles to the Sierras. Mammoth is a legendary mountain but because of easy access to LA, it attracts all the jerks.

Heading down towards the end of October for a little running event and a whole lot of party. Just wish airfares would drop once in a while instead of going up. I was reading that the best fares occur 18-25 days from travel date. Do any of you find this to be true or should I just book now?

I spent 6 days at the MGM....picked up the rental at McCarran and with that sucker we went everywhere...we had free parking at the Hotel and we actually stayed out one nite when we went to the Grand Canyon, and stayed overnite in Tusayan...We travelled on the famous Route 66..Visited the Hoover Damm and a couple of State Parks in Nevada and Arizona..While in Vegas we took the elevated rail everywhere..

Its a fun city, no doubt..saw a couple of shows and splurged one nite at Emeril's at the MGM...

Highly recommend it, and again early March weather was magnificent for our taste.

Is there an off season for Vegas when prices are lower on the hotels?

Not a gambler, but the wife and I went for the 1st time in March 2010, and fell in love with Vegas and all that is near in Nevada and Arizona.

Cant wait to go back again, and when we do...we will do it again in March..as the weather that time of the year was awesome...We actually froze in Tuzayan and the Canyon, but we were prepared for the cold weather there.

I won two trips to Vegas, first trip we were able to tour the Hoover Dam.
With all the new casinos popping up, there are always new shows to see.
Everyone should visit Vegas at least once in their lifetime.
