Got back from Cuba a week ago, fifth time there. The island is very safe , much more than you can say for some of these countries with so much unrest are. A friend of mine used to go to Venezuela all the time but said it was getting worse than Mexico, he didn't feel safe there anymore.

.....Has anyone ever tried a bit further south, Venezuela? With 1200 miles of Caribbean coastline, no hurricanes, The Andes, Angel Falls, The Amazon, Margarita Island and some of the most incredibly beatiful women in the world you should give it a try. Much to my surprise the people actually like note americanos, Canadians too!

Tried Cuba in 2004, loved it and hope to go back again in February. Travelled alone, felt very safe, stayed at small hotel (only 2 or 3 star) near the lovely and interesting old city of Trinidad. Food fresh and acceptable (not gourmet for sure), hotel was all inclusive and cheap - so no complaints here. Only 120 rooms, by the second day the friendly staff knew everyone by name. Cubans definitely do not live in luxury but seem contented with what little they have and are always willing to share. No stress! I was very impressed. Aware it is far from perfect but overall I loved my visit. Just my opinion for what it's worth.

Actually Americans can get to Cuba, but they have to go either via Canada or Mexico. Cuba will welcome Americans with open arms.
As for myself, I have been to Cuba for 2 weeks in a 5 star resort ( Club Tryp Cayo Coco ) and the food was somewhat dismal, I'd rather spend my winters in Mexico. But to each their own.

Just got back from Cuba last night. Great times. I also went through escapes.ca. SoOcCoNJ, of course you'll get better deals, you're closer to these places than us.
