If you want a sport which highlights the strength, stamina, and wits of the athlete, look no further than WRESTLING. No, I'm not talking about WWE and that "show off" stuff. I mean high school and college wrestling. Forget about having a machine help you win as in racing, or a total team effort as in football, baseball, basketball, hockey, etc., etc. This is 1 on 1, with 2 people of about the same weight, competing to see who can use ther bairn and their braun to overcome the other. In all other sports, you can see the end of the competition. It is either the finish line, the end of the fourth period or quarter, or whatever. But in wrestling, the match can end at any moment with one being pinned by the other. The action is fast and exciting. Turnovers and upsets happen without notice, and many times, the person you think is going to win because he looks more muscular or fit than the opponent can make one tiny mistake and if the opponent seizes the moment,he wins. It's exciting. See for yourself. Go to a high school or college match. The season officially bevins after Thanksgiving each year.

Losing the graduating seniors from any team can be devastating for that team the following year, causing it to drop rank in its league. But the bright side to that is that two to three years later, those who replaced the grads will have experience and the team will be a powerhouse once again. Vicious cycle, though.

My younger son's middle school wrestling team just returned from a tournament in Kingman, Az. He brought home the first place medal (in his older brother's footsteps) in his weight. He won two matches by pin in the first period and the third by a 12-0 decision.

What was funny is that one of his opponents was a girl. He said, "She was stronger than me but I beat her. She tried to muscle me, but I used my moves on her." Sounded cute coming from a 13 year old.

WWE, WWF, WOW (and all of their ilk) are nothing more than third rate situation comedies (or dramadies since some believe they can "act").

I concur with Handymanron and others that the "true" sport of wrestling is what you see at the Jr./Sr. High School, College/University level, and of course, the Olympics (Greco-Roman or Freestyle).

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa, CSU-Bakersfield, and Minnesota are probably the "top five" stellar programs in the U.S. (my High School coach in Simi Valley, CA was a graduate from OU and a member of the 1960 Olympic team).

Da Crusher dead at 79

To anybody who grew up in the midwest, Da Crusher was a wrestling icon in the 60's and 70's.

Wrestling has helped my son, 16, become a better lineman in football... his true love. But has excelled in wrestling.

Hope your son is doing fine, it just burns me when they call WWE wrestling, these WWE fans have no clue to what real wrestling is. Try doing a search on wrestling and you will get that junk. Any way wrestling season is almost here, can't wait.
Have a nice day

handymanron, to bad that a lot of people don't see the success stories out of high school sports. A lot of these kids will tell you that once you get it shape the sports get so fun at this point.
Hope your son is doing well nowdays. One thing is with these individual sports, they have to compete on their own and rely on themselves. No competition between teammates on being the high scorer or the like. However it is still a team and they have to work for team points.
Another thing I see is like in track and wrestling, it seems at though the competitors even form a friendship that is different than basketball.

Justme4fun-- Everything you said is right on. I would only add that you not only have to want it, but be willing to really sacrifice and work your butt off for it too.

My son was lured by the track coach to participate in track his senior year. He later said it helped his breathing and endurance immensely. (By the way, did I mention he is asthmatic, and until 8th grade, was a sickly, even scrawny child?)

I agree that high school wrestling is the greatest. When my son wrestled and when he played football the coach said he could always tell the wrestlers, because of the agility and no fear of making a tackle or getting tackled. He also said they were less apt to get hurt as they were generally in better shape and knew how to get the job done without putting themselves at risk.
Wrestling taught my son confidence as he wasn't the greatest athlete but he could compete with the tops. Many times he went onto the mat and the opponent outmuscled him, but he still got the job done. It was fun watching those kids come off the mat shaking their head. He now wrestles in college and I watch him every chance I get. College is not like high school as in high school these kids are one family.
My son said once about his wrestling "you have to WANT it" which is so true in all of life.

A wrestler in Bakersfield, Ca. who graduated this year had an undefeated high school record and went to Iowa. I saw him at the state finals in April. He was AWESOME. His name is Jake Varner.

Football64-- My son made it to the State finals in Bakersfield this year, his senior year. He was defeated in the fourth championship round so he didn't place at the State level.

As a pre-season conditioner his senior year, he went out for cross country. He was the fastest runner on the team (amall high school). When wrestling season rolled around, he credited cross country with having helped his endurance and controlling his breathing (he has allergies and asthma))

He is attending Cal State Bakersfield this year, but won't be wrestling the first semester. I encouraged him to sit this one out in order to get acclimated to the academics since they are the top priority.

My son's a junior in high school and been Wrestling since his freshman year. Only went out for the team to improve his skills as an offensive lineman on the football team (his favorite sport). A good friend and former NFL player suggested wrestling to him.

What a tough sport!!! Only a few kids can stick with it. My son made the Varsity squad as a sophomore and has done well. His football skills and dominance on the field are a direct result of him wrestling.

What was I thinking all those years of him playing little league baseball. I should of signed him up in wrestling. There are tournaments throughout California from March to June for kids of all ages and weigths to wrestle with a local club.

I'm not sure, but I know Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are usually in there. Oklahoma State usually the better of the two... but close.

Oklahoma is a big wrestling state. I do know a few men who still wrestle, but I'm always interested in finding more local, and occassionally when traveling.

You bet your sweet bippy they do. Collegiate, Grecko-Roman, and Olympic styles to name a few. And the wrestling sportswear business is booming. Knee pads, headgear, singlets, wrestling shoes, they're all going strong.

It's hard to find guys to wrestle with. I used to be a professional wrestler, but have 'a real job' now. I miss the matches, and just having fun. I could start doing judo again, it is easier to find matches.

You're right handymanron, wrestling is a great sport. I actually never really thought of what you said before, on how there is only 1 on 1 contact, and they have to use their brains and brauns and all that. Football is a great sport too actually, but one gets hurt more in that one, ooyyyy! ouch! I like both though :)

I understand what you are saying. I started wrestling when I was in JHS, training at the HS I would later attend. Though I am a big man, I didn't have the agility of the other boys, so I didn't stick with it. Today I watch WWE and realize it's a show. They even say it's a show, calling it "Sports Entertainment." On another thread, someone described them as athletes who bulk on steroids. I disagree. Plus, several started out as amateur wrestlers, even going to the olympic level. I am in no way downgrading what you say, but I enjoy the "entertainment" value.
