It's been quite amazing to watch Canadian gas prices remain relatively stable while prices in the U.S. have risen. Gasoline prices in Canada were stuck at ~103c/L for weeks while prices in the U.S. were increasing.

To further investigate, I decided to throw together a few charts showing what I'm referring to. If you can't see the images, head over to the GasBuddy Blog Homepage so you don't miss this comparison.

Looking at the chart labeled "Difference in prices", you'll notice that I am tracking the difference between the adjusted prices in the U.S. and Canada- I converted all amounts to U.S. dollars and converted liters to gallons. You can see that during the last part of winter, from February to mid-March, prices in...

There are many other differences between the USA and Canada than are listed in this recent blog posting.

Canadian oil production has been basically going up since the 1980s, while U.S. oil production has going down since the 1980s.

Canada is second only to Saudi Arabia in known oil reserves, and they have roughly 8 times the amount of oil reserves that the USA does.

Canada consumes around 8.5 times *less* than what the USA consumes in oil daily, and Canada actually exports more oil than they consume daily. Canada can also refine roughly 89% of the amount of oil that they consume daily. The USA can only wish to be in Canada's position when it comes to oil production & consumption.

Isn't Canada's population about the same as California's, shouldn't be a discussion about the difference in prices but more in the size of the population.

In addition to higher taxes, I think there is less competition in Canada.

Most of our imported oil/gas actually comes from Canada not OPEC.

Thanks Patrick for taking the time and effort to chart the differences. One striking note from your article points out the differences in the taxes the 2 countries pay on gasoline.

If the U.S. has cheaper gasoline than Canada, then why doesn't the chart show that. The chart is contrary to what he says. Also, if we would just take, Chicago, California and Alaska out of the average price, it would be considerably less, around $2.75 a gallon.

Perhaps climate, population, taxes, and other factors make a big difference.

I have to buy my fuel in the US, so I really don't care about the Canadian market. Please, this is not a disrespectful statement.

Canadians pay more for gas than we do so their steady higher prices make us down here appreciate our lower cost blessings.

Canada's sacrificing their land surface striping it for the oil sands... they'll regret it and pay a higher price later for doing so...

Here, I've seen price drops Saturday. That catches people filling up to leave town or on payday. A bit unethical, but legal. Best bet, watch the futures, if they drop on a Friday, buy as little as possible until Saturday p.m. or Sunday.
