(Wall Street Journal) - The Obama administration will soon issue sweeping new environmental safety rules for hydraulic fracturing on federal land, setting a new standard that natural gas wells on all lands eventually could follow.

The rules, which are likely to be unveiled by the Interior Department within days, are designed to address concerns that the method of extracting natural gas known as "fracking" can contaminate groundwater. Among other things, they create new guidelines for constructing wells and treating waste water, according to a draft of the proposed rules reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

There is drilling on Public lands as we speak, hence the rules.

Why issue rules when they are not drilling on government land?

Well johntxx, if you actually believe that full disclosure is already being practiced by these fracking corporations, then compliance will be a total breeze for them. You must be very happy. However, since we the people are being mislead by these frackers, yes, it will be a total horrific anguish and painful situation for them. Too bad.

Some resources to educate yourself on hydraulic fracturing:
FracFocus Chemical Disclosure Registry
Texas regulations protect surface and groundwater
HYDRAULIC FRACTURING OF NATURAL GAS WELLS IN MICHIGAN

The Michigan DEQ link above addresses the concerns about hydraulic fracturing:
"The concerns over hydraulic fracturing center on five issues: (1) migration of gas or fracture fluids, (2) water use, (3) management of produced water, (4) surface spills, and (5) identification of chemical additives. Each issue is addressed in turn below."

Ignorance can be removed by the acquisition of knowledge.

Isn't the Department of Interior one of the five government agencies which Presidential candidate Ron Paul has promised to shut down?

I'm in favor of safe fracking when it comes to clean groundwater. Who isn't?

Always dislike the word "sweeping" when regarding laws. Although something had to be done about posioning our ground water. Imagine an archaeologist six hundred years from now, discovering the reason the human race had a huge decline was we posioned our own water. "Why would they have done such a thing?" asks the student archaeologist. "Well, there was a time, solar and wind energy and harnessing rivers and ocean tides was just beyond the human scope of things." the teacher replies.

Here Obama goes again, more red tape, more SEIU government workers to push papers, more cost to consumers.

Other than being "cheap" I can rationalize no other "pro" to put in the "fracking is good " column.

Too much damage, too many unknowns, and a terrible waste of an enormous amount of water.

Are these scientifically true and economically feasible or just more regulations that drive things up. Example an acre of water costs us $34 now but due to EPA regulations in 2 years or less this same acre of water will now cost $161 an acre.
