President Barack Obama’s administration proposed in November that the average fuel economy of U.S. fleets rise to 54.5 miles per gallon. That would reduce the amount of money available for the Highway Trust Fund by 13 percent from 2012 to 2022, the CBO said in a report released today.

“Policies that are designed to reduce gasoline consumption, including those that would impose stricter standards for the fuel economy of vehicles, could decrease revenues for the trust fund and thus could add to the shortfall,” the report said.

Our government and the environmental nutcases demand an increase in the fuel economy in vehicles, Fthat forces the big three in Detroit design and build sardine cans on wheels for everybody to drive, the government then hikes the fuel tax rates and gas prices go higher and higher at the pump but not our job wages to pay for it. We do need to take care of our roads. This would eliminate the person with an electric vehicle not paying any tax for driving and if someone does not drive, they would not pay any road tax.

Either the cars are going to become more efficient and use less gasoline and/or people are going to start using cars less and find other forms of transportation which they can afford. The end result is consumer gasoline consumption is going to lessen per individual.

The out of control spenders will find a way to make up the difference which means more taxes on something else. Don't forget, states will also have this problem.

We need to push our lawmakers to pass a budget (which hasn't been done in 3+ years) in order to determine how to make up for this (and many other) budget shortfalls.
