Demand for U.S. gasoline fell last week as high prices at the pump persisted, MasterCard said on Tuesday in its weekly Spending Pulse.

Gasoline demand fell 6.1 percent from a year earlier as a gallon of the fuel at the pump cost 1.3 percent more than it did last year, MasterCard said.

Gasoline use was unchanged from the previous week.

Retail prices, however, fell 2 cents a gallon from the previous week to $3.90 a gallon in the week to April 20, MasterCard said.

The report also said the four-week moving average for demand fell for the 57th straight time, down 4.7 percent from a comparable period a year ago.

Demand was hit hardest last week in the Midwest region, where year-over-year declines were as high as 7.7 percent.

Meanwhile, U.S. motorists have opted to cut back on driving ...

Just goes to show how much American consumers were wasting. And it's not because of unemployment level. There are fewer unemployed people this year than there was a year ago.

Average driving per yr = around 12,000 miles. Gas price double from $2 to $ 4.00/ gal. Typical fair MPG around = 20 mpg. :: amount of Gasoline/yr. = 600 gal.
@ $2.00/G = $1,200/yr. At $4.00/G = double or $2,400/yr.
or instead of $100/mo for gas jumps to $200/mo.

so what did you expect to happen to consumptiom.

There is no cheap gas! Maybe, in Saudi Arabia or countries that subsidize or give their drivers a break.

summer travel will take a hit this year for sure - especially if we see more wide spread use of those "extra fees" for using your plastic at the pump!!

All these stats are useless as predictors of price as long as there is unfettered speculation in the market.

Car offer freedom. To prohibit people from driving inexpensively is to take away freedom and choice.

That is not America - the Beacon of Freedom.

They keep testing at what price we slow down in our fuel buying. The keep testing us at high $3.00 range, and I would expect it will stay there.
