Switching to a battery-powered vehicle will yield measurable savings in a motorist’s energy bills, according to a new study, while also reducing global warming emissions.
But the report by the Union of Concerned Scientists, or UCS, finds that the advantages vary widely depending upon where you live. In the best regions, savings on energy can add up to more than $1,000 annually – with battery cars cleaner than anything else on the road. But even in the worst regions, those heavily dependent upon coal to generate electricity, the UCS report says battery vehicles retain a significant advantage over traditional automotive powertrain technology.

And I bet those public high-speed charging stations will be very happy to have customers waiting around for 15-20 minutes!

Oh, you got your car for free? And you're keeping it less than a year? Wonderful, I'm happy for you.

tnfran: But where in the article does it mention about the factors of elec production and its 'impact on the environment' ??? I think the article is weighted lopsidedly.

Not at all. It makes good sense and far easier (and more economical) to address the pollution problem of one source most effectively then to try to address the little pollution problems of all the cars being driven.

The article mentions about elec vehicles "For electric vehicles, the study also considered such things as the energy used and pollution created while mining coal." But where in the article does it mention about the factors of elec production and its 'impact on the environment' ??? I think the article is weighted lopsidedly.

Analysis using averages like this is not valid. It assumes that because a certain percentage of electricity is produced from coal, that same percentage of electricity will still be generated from coal, the most environmentally harmful source. The new EV's will be using new electricity that has not yet been produced. Therefore the question will have to be asked how this electricity will be generated from.

In most places no new coal fired generators are being installed. Most new additional electricity are being produced runs on natural gas which is the cleanest burning fossil fuel. Therefore new EV's will most likely be using electricity generated from natural gas.

EV's therefore are green. There is no question about this.

Amazing how they never mention how long these batteries are supposed to last or how much it will cost to replace them.

The harder they try to sway public opinion, the more irrelevant they become.
